Greetings from the waters off the coast of New Hampshire as I try and stretch an already-fading sailing season, one more weekend longer. The air is cooler, and the colors of the coast make clear what most of us already know, summer is over and fall is here to stay. The world at large remains reasonably stable, there is still a Nasdaq but the economy remains sluggish with no apparent accelerators in sight and no one even dares to say dot.com anymore. Most of us are lucky if we still get mutual fund statements with more than a zero balance on them.

From the College comes news of one of the largest admission yields ever and the longawaited arrival of the Report of the Committee on Institutional Diversity and Equity, both healthy indicators that the College remains strong and focused on being a leader in institutional diversity.

Though the mail bag was exceptionally light this past month, Michael Caldwell sent me his "sense of place" paragraph for a future issue of the Alumni Magazine which focused on the magical feelings that Chase Field created for him during soccer season. Michael is pastoring the Lake Region Parish with its three congregations in Barton, Glover and West Glover in the Northeast Kingdom (Vermont). He is also starting a bold community youth ministry to meet the needs for more contemporary adolescent involvement. Keep up the good work, Michael.

Albert G. "Sandy" Tierney III sent a letter thanking me for the kind words I wrote in a previous column about his vigorous hair growth. Sandy also reminded me he is chairman of the development committee of SquashBusters, an international organization that helps disadvantaged inner-city youth break through society's walls and forge a better life. It's a wonderful program and they have had tremendous success changing the odds for some great kids. If you're interested in supporting this work, you can call Squashßusters at (617) 442-8838 or contact them through the Web site at www.squashbusters.org. And from the waters off Manchester By The Sea, recently spotted doing a documentary about blue fishing for the ESPN's Senior Fishing Channel (available in some very selected markets) were David Lampert and David Wendell, pretending they actually knew what they were doing. The former roommates were busy handling drinks and fishing poles while navigating the open waters. David Lampert continues to run a large recreational sports subsidiary of an international Norwegian company, while David Wendell is working in the financial services sector continuing to actively separate institutions and individuals from their net assets, or in other words, venture capital.

Well that's all the news that's fit to print. Keep sending the e-mails and letters.
