Quote/unquote "'Trials of the Century' are very interesting, aren't they? They seem to happen every couple of years." —JOHNNIE COCHRAN JR. ON CAMPUS TO MODERATE AN APRIL PANEL DISCUSSION, "SPINNING WITH THE MEDIA"
THE FORESTRY TEAM WOMEN chopped and hurled their way to second place in the 55th annual Dartmouth Woodsmen's Meet on the Green in April. Co-captain Dori Sugar '01 won first place in the women's chain throw and co-captain Kim Iwamoto '03 placed second in the axe throw, while Erica Close '02 took second place in the single bucksaw competition.
The Forestry Team, part of the Dartmouth Outing Club, hosts the event for New England and Canadian college teams every three years. The first forestry meet was held at Dartmouth in 1947, the pet project of DOC Director John Rand '38, DOC woodcraft advisor Ross McKenney and Bill Robes of Kimball Union Academy. That first face-off pitted Dartmouth against Kimball Union and Williams College. This year Dartmouth fielded 18 competitors wielding sharp blades—six on the women's team, six on the men's and six on a coed team dubbed the "Jack & Jill" team. The men's team finished in 11th place overall, while the coed team placed 17 th. Although two Forestry Team alums have gone pro on the forestry competition circuit, Sugar, Close and I wamoto say they'll probably hang up their axes when they leave school. But, says Close, "I can use the skills forever."
