Just back from Ecuador, where I led a team to perform reconstructive surgery. This is an annual event, and probably the most meaningful thing I do these days. Eventually I'm going to drag Lizzie Eldredge Alexakos down there with me to deliver anesthesia. And George can come along as an interpreter. I've been waiting for her to stop having babies, and I think she's finally done.
Just before I left, I had a little e-mail exchange with Chris Mullery, who is out west leading a band of biker chicks on back-country tours. Okay...not just chicks, but it sounded good. Check him out on the Web at www.renegadetours.com, hop on your Harley, and head his way.
Surely Chris has hiked through Kansas, where Dr. Gary Weiner recently expanded his ophthalmology practice to include the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas. Gary got his medical degree at the U of Kansas, followed by an internship there and an ophthalmology residency at the University of Minneapolis. Gary is married to Mary Anne and has three children.
Elsewhere out west, around the San Francisco area, Dave Pine recently announced his candidacy in the 19th Assembly District Democratic primary. Dave's day job as vice president of Handspring Inc. gives him business experience to combine with his experience in government, which originated during his undergraduate days when he served as a member of the New Hampshire state legislature. More recendy he served for six years on the planning commission of Redwood City. What's next, Dave, the White House?
Nearer to home, Mark Maletz bears the interesting title of virtual associate professor of management at Babson College in the School of Executive Education. He is internationally recognized for expertise in the areas of leadership development, organizational transformation and reshaping business culture. In this role he can discuss future scenarios for e-business and new approaches for traditional firms establishing a presence on the Web. And with that in mind, I'm left wondering if he's "virtual" because of the relationship to the Web or because he's not quite an associate professor. Hmm.
Next door, in Newton, Kirk Arnold was just named president and chief operating officer of Nerve Wire, a management consulting and systems integration firm. In her new position she is responsible for managing sales, clients, human resources, finance and administration, information technology, setting the company directionsounds to me like she's in charge of everything. Good luck, Kirk.
Switching from Newton, Massachusetts, to Newtown, Connecticut, Frank Ryan is writing a new editorial column for Golf Course Home. net. The column, 'Ask the Architect," is designed to provide practical information to individuals looking to build their dream home on a golf course. Franks expertise comes from masters degrees from the Yale School of Architecture and the Yale School of Management, followed by more than 15 years of experience in custom residential design. The thing Fd want to know if I was building a home on a golf course is how to avoid broken windows. So, Frank, what's your handicap? Finally, to make you feel really old, Leslie and Dave Shula's oldest son has been accepted to Dartmouth, where he will carry on the Shula football tradition. He has been playing quarterback at a top high school in Florida, so I suspect we will be looking for some Ivy League championships in the next couple of years. Congratulations, and good luck!
