There have been many 1981 gatherings among friends this year (perhaps practicing for the 25th reunion)! Pam (Donovan) Gehret reported that she was packing her bags for a "ladies weekend" with Amy Beringer Grubb, Liz Keppler McCloy, Molly Sundberg Van Metre and Tracy Bennett Nordhoff on Kiawah Island. She said Jake gets his turn eachyearwith the guys' golf trip that he has with Gordy Davenport, Tom Ryan, Paul Feinman, Frank Merrill and Gino Gabianelli. According to Pam, her post-weekend stories will be much more interesting than Jake's. Gino was recently featured on an episode ofExtreme Home Makeover when he was consulted as the medical expert concerning a degenerative eye disease suffered by the father of the family being helped.
Jake and Pam attended the Dartmouth Campaign kickoff party in New York City, where they saw John Westerfield and his wife, Marlissa, Karen McKeel Calby, Becky Randall and Dave Edelson.
Stop the presses on this one: There is a rumor that the eternal bachelor Kenny Fagan is engaged to be married. Ken, Chris Andrews and Chip Bettencourt recently traveled to North Carolina to impose on the generosity of Doug Tyler and his wife, Donna, at their great southern home that, according to Chip, has "lots of land, complete with horses, tons of deer and black widow spiders." Doug is the head of surgery at Duke and the VA. He and Donna live in Hillsborough with their two daughters, Britta and Colby. Also excelling in the medical field is Bob Higgins who moved with his wife, Molly, and their three children to Chicago two years ago. Higgy is the chairman of the department of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at Rush University Medical Center. He sees Jerry James, who also lives there and is the president of Edward R.James Inc., a large real estate development company.
We celebrated a great mini-reunion in January at the Dartmouth vs. UNH mens hockey game at the Verizon Center in Manchester. It was one of the craziest hockey games I've ever seen. Dartmouth was losing 7-3 and rebounded to win 8-9. Bob acquired a few more grey hairs, but is grateful that he still has hair. We both spend lots of time with Ingrid (Schmakel) Stallsmith cheering on the Hanover High School hockey team that our sons play on together. Ingrid is an incredible fourth-grade teacher at the local elementary school and each year there are many students anxiously waiting for their classroom assignments hoping they'll get into her classroom. She and her husband, Joseph, live with their two children, Jonathan and Kristina, in Hanover.
Susan Jangro and Joe '82 are celebrating the early admission of their oldest son, David, into the Dartmouth class of 2009. She is very busy juggling the schedules of their four sons and renovating a new beach house they purchased in Ponte Vedra, Florida.
Thanks for all of the great information you each sent me for the column—keep it coming!
