"My post-graduation plans involvean unemployment line and a steadydiet of macaroni and cheese," says Alex Berger'02. But peek at theWashington, D.C., native's resumeand you know he will soon be sinking his teeth into something moresubstantial. There you'll find theserious—he's one of the top debaters to come out of Dartmouthalongside the decidedly lessserious, including internships withcomedy hits Saturday Night Liveand Conan O'Brien and the Website Modern Humorist. As a member of Dartmouth's Forensics Unionfor four years, Berger spent up to30 hours a week researching topicssuch as U.S. policy toward NativeAmericans and Arctic drilling. At thenational debate tournament earlierthis year, Berger earned honors asbest speaker and as part of thebest team of the year. But Bergersees comedy, not debate, in his future. Though much of his time atSNL involved fetching coffee, sitting in on writers' meetings was inspiring. He'll soon be moving to LosAngeles to pursue television writingand production. "Life is about adventure. I learned that on the Discovery Channel," he deadpans.
