Steve Double sent me a note this summer from Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he is still working as a lawyer for Linklaters. Steve moved to Brazil in June, after living in London for the past two and a half years. "I will be down here fora few years and absolutely love it," writes Steve. He fell in love with Brazil ever since he dumped German his sophomore year and decided to take intensive Portuguese and go on the Brazil LSA in Rio. But Steve fell in love with more than Brazil recently, as he was married last September in Italy. "It was amazing," he writes. "My wife is named Michali and she is from Miami. Living in London was great, even if it was just to be able to get married in Italy!" Congratulations, Steve and Michali! I wonder if Steve ever ran into Eugene Park in the UK, as Eugene just returned to N.Y.C. after spending a year at a British law firm in London as part of a lawyer-exchange program. Eugene and his wife now live in Tribeca, and his firm recently merged with the larger, Boston-based firm, Ropes & Gray, LLP Eugene has been in touch with Mark Harrison recently, who is now working for the Securities and Exchange Commission in Atlanta and taking yoga classes!
Mich Leopold wrote a very touching note through the class Web site to share news about the very difficult but important year she has had. "The past year has been a big one, filled with emotion and learning," writes Mich. "In December my mother unexpectedly passed away. This tragedy has had a profound impact and has taught me how lucky we each are for every day we have with those we love. It has also taught me just how special parents are, which in turn reminded me of my days at Dartmouth, where we welcomed our parents as visitors...be it to take us to dinner at the Hanover Inn or to join us in drinking top-notch (not!) beers in various frat houses. Parents were always welcome and this is how it should be. My thanks go out to all the members of the class of '94 who took time away from their amazingly busy and successful lives to support my father and me during this tough time." Mich also shares a very positive moment of the past year, announcing her engagement to David Cleary. "Many of you may have met him at our fifth reunion," writes Mich. She must have known he was The One when he left the reunion stating that "Dartmouth is an amazing place!" Mich sends her love to all, and leaves us with an important reminder to take time out of our busy lives "to share time and affection with family and friends." Thanks for your candid and heartfelt message, Mich, our deepest sympathies to your family, and best wishes to you and David for the future. If anyone would like to contact Mich, you may e-mail her at mleopold@ mba2001.hbs. edu. I will give the last word of this column to another one of our classmates who is living abroad these days. Jamie Knies has recently been reactivated after getting out of the Army five years ago. He is now in Baghdad, and "staying out of trouble." Jamies also wonders, "Does anyone want to start a Dartmouth Club in the Cradle of Civilization?" Be careful, Jamie, and I hope you are able to come home soon. That's all I have for this month, folks. I hope you continue to take care of yourselves and each other, and that you will please continue to stay in touch.
