I begin this column with not good news. Seven classmates have left our ranks: Tom Sheehan on November 11,2001; doctors Charlie Brown on August 3,
2002, and Bob Pollock on January 11; George Nichols on January 16; Bud Lynch in July 2002; Robert Stearns on December 27, 2002; and Art Soule in January.
Again—news not so bright! The amazing class of 1938 is approaching a record for the lowest attendance at a 65 th reunion. As of today (February 15), we have only 21 classmates and 19 wives/guests who will be with us in June—there are 23 classmates "on the fence" and, we hope, the majority will answer in the affirmative!
Frances Newman, Franks wife, writes: "Holly Newman, her husband and I had a delightful holiday reunion in San Diego with Charlene Barber (Mrs. Hans), who is still a very active community spirit. My own activities are less active, but I do continue the Newman musical tradition by singing with the university chorus in Berkeley."
How many of your read Dave Duffy's inspiring tale of his canoe trip down the Connecticut River through the Hartland Rapids with Chick Mock in a recent issue of this magazine? "Even though we didn't make it to the sea (our trip ended in Hartford!), my only regret is that I will never paddle down the Connecticut River with Dartmouth women or float by Hartford in the nude." I have asked Dave (actually demanded) that he give us an oral description of this and past trips at our 65th!
Hope to see many of you in June!
