Greetings, brother '72s! As I write this in late October we are well into autumn on the Hanover Plain. We've seen snow already, today it is pouring rain and Saturday promises sunshine and 70 degrees to ring in November! Ah, lovely New England weather!
Since last I ventured onto these pages I've received word that Paul Oostenbrug ran the Chicago Marathon, finishing in under four hours. When not in training Paul is the president of a consulting company that specializes in locating government funding for his clients. Could there be a link there?
Saturday October 4 our erstwhile mini-reunion chair Shel Prentice gathered a considerable force of '72s at the Top of the Hop after the Penn game followed by dinner at Murphy's Tavern, known in our days as the Village Green on South Main Street. What the game lacked these gatherings more than made up for in spirit and good cheer. New Yorkers Marc Josephson, Jim Macko and our fearless leader Jon Einsidler and family (the triplets are growing fast!) dropped by, joining Bill Price and Joel Hyatt who were representing the West Coast contingent. Joel's son, Jared '06, took time out from his busy undergraduate duties to pay us a visit. I had a great time reminiscing and catching up with these fellows, along with Joe Davis, who had ridden in from Dallas. Dan Hergott left the soon to be frozen tundra of Minnesota to make the trek, arriving to find Jamie Mac Arthur, who had skipped south across the border among us. They teamed up with Brendan O'Neill (Delaware) Mike Hufft and Chuck Leer (both Missouri) to swap tales of athletic contests ofyore and other diverse and sundry experiences, some real, others undoubtedly enhanced by the vagaries of our advancing age but rich in the retelling nonetheless!
Among we "locals," Peter Heed and Patricia dropped by, later offering free "Get Out of Jail" cards to those at dinner (good only EAST of the Connecticut River!). Wayne Young, Peter Paquette, the omnipresent John Burke and Joe Leslie round- ed out the '72 crew who have migrated back to the Hanover area in later life.
Among our brethren who joined us from the class of'71 were Bob "Auggie Dog" Augello, John Colangelo, Whit Fran and Chris Kirk. Star Johnson '70 and Rick Gerardi '74 rounded out the pack. Truly a good time had by all!
In other news, Shel tells me that he and Joe Fallon met at the Mount Mansfield Trout Club a few weeks ago to do some early fall hiking and related socializing. Joe currently hangs his hat in Hinesburg, Vermont, and has a daughter, Sarah, attending Colby College.
Other news has it that Stu Simms was in town recently as part of his duties at the Rockefeller Center for the Social Sciences. Sorry I missed you, Stu, give me a call when you're in town next time!
And that, my friends, wraps up this installment. Please keep those cards, letters and e-mails coming in!
Yours in proudly wearing the Green.
