This column was to have been written by Bob Huke, who was elected secretary at the 55th reunion. Unfortunately, Bob died unexpectedly in January, and Bud Elliott has asked me to step in. Bob Herrick, who has agreed to again serve as secretary, will take over after this issue.

Bob was among the best-known and most active of our classmates. He returned to Dartmouth in 1953 as a member of the geography department, and retired as a full professor after 43 years of teaching. During his retirement he had been very active in both College and class affairs, among other things planning and leading many trips for alumni to Asia. In addition, for 1948 he led several memorable visits to the College Grant. His consistent love for and positive attitude to- ward Dartmouth were unmatched. We have also lost Bob Foster, who died of injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Florida. Bob was one of our most loyal classmates, and always a positive presence at reunions. Our deepest sympathies are extended to their wives, Ellie and Sally, and to their families.

Dr. Jack Bobbitt and his wife, Jeanne, continue to be active from their home in Newport News, Virginia. They were deeply involved in the creation of the original Medicare law in 1965, and spent many hours last year developing a multifaceted program designed to correct the many faults that currently exist in that system. They have received encouragement from Bill Frist, the majority leader, and we wish them success in this very worthwhile endeavor.

The winter mini-reunion at Dowd's Country- Inn in Lyme featured good weather and careful athleticism. Foxy Parker, Pete Foster, Sam Wilkin- son and Joe Smith pronounced conditions at the Dartmouth Skiway excellent. They were joined by 15 others at the Wednesday dinner. More on this in the next 1948 newsletter. Incidentally, be certain to check Pete's 1948 Web site at www.dartmouth.edu. He does a great job.

Our next mini-reunion is planned for the Yale weekend in Hanover October 7,8 and 9. This is always a lively affair, with about 40 in attendance. Many classes have successful minis elsewhere, with Florida, Chicago and several West Coast cities among the more popular locations. If you are interested in participating in, and especially in helping to plan, such a get-together, please let Bud Elliott (belliox319@rcn.com) know.
