Continuing the momentum generated at our recent reunions, 1948 is an active class. Our “first Tuesday” luncheons at the Norwich Inn are always well-attended and planning for the fall mini-reunion (October 2 and 3) is well under way. We encourage all to join us at these events.

Jim Schaefer has embraced his Alumni Council responsibilities with his characteristic enthusiasm. Jim enjoys his assignment to the council’s academic affairs committee; this led him to conversations with a number of physics professors during which they discussed one of Jim’s current interests, photon entanglement. It’s a far cry from the direct marketing that he specialized in for many years.

Another classmate who easily gets involved is Sonny Drury. Two Dartmouth graduates are writing a book and preparing a film covering Dartmouth’s impact on the development of skiing in this country, and have found in Sonny a great storehouse of information. One of the stories Sonny remembered is that the Outing Club used to run a children’s carnival each winter on the golf course, and that in 1940 he was the overall winner! Sonny’s contributions alone will make the book worthwhile.

One of the decisions made at our fall mini was to have John Hatheway continue discussions with the College concerning an endowed class of 1948 memorial fund, and it is hoped that this will be in place before our October class meeting. It will initially include gifts now providing for the Class of 1948 Scholar-Athlete Award as well as significant amounts received in memory of Al McAllister and Bob Reynolds. Once established the fund will continue to support the scholar-athlete award and will also help provide for as-needed replacement of the rockers on the porch of the Hanover Inn. Additional thoughts relative to this endeavor will be welcomed.

I am saddened to report the deaths of Dave Kadyk, Truman “Gus” Metzel and Nat Merrill. We have also lost Marjorie Lieby, the widow of Herb Call; Marjorie continued to be a strong supporter of the class and College long after Herb’s death. We extend our deepest sympathies to their families and friends.
