William Manning was named in the Rochester Business Journal as a successful broker on Wall Street who wanted to eventually run his own business, and did—very successfully. He has stepped down as CEO of Manning & Napier Advisors, but still keeps very active. The Journal said, "In addition to fostering new ideas in the market-place, the quintessential entrepreneur also set up the Henry Van Dyne Memorial Scholarship, named after the man whose scholarship gave Manning the opportunity to come to Dartmouth."

President Ralph Manuel's letter to the class outlined several new ideas, among which was pur- suing a 58-'08 project. He said: "I have ap- proached the College through the dean of first-year students and the Dartmouth Outing Club about a project that would permit us to be- come involved with the class of 2008 starting with their DOC trips, before classes begin and at activities throughout their first year. The College is enthusiastic about the project and believes there would be many opportunities for cross-generation experiences.

"The Sophomore Summer, when the entire class must be in Hanover, will provide real opportunities for interaction, and we will be calling on many classmates to lend their experience and expertise to working with those who will follow us by a half century throughout their undergraduate careers."

Joe Kabat writes that he's already had a '5880 experience. He interviewed Nashua area high school seniors, candidates for the class of 2008, and said, "I lit the fireplace, and tried to have every-one engage the candidates. Andy, Ernest was our secret weapon. These young people were sitting on his couch. So he got up beside them, put his head in their laps to be stroked and everyone was relaxed and opened up." Ernest is Joe's four-legged buddy, a sheltie.

From TYCO's annual report: "H. Carl McCall, age 68, joined our board in March 2003. Mr. McCall served as comptroller of the State of New York from 1993 until November 2002, when he became the Democratic nominee for governor of New York. Mr. McCall serves as vice chairman of Health Point, a private equity fund, and is a director of New Plan, a real estate investment corpo- ration, and Standard Commercial Corp., one of the worlds largest leaf tobacco dealers."
