Summertime, and the living is easy....Remember the news reports about Alabama Chief Justice Ron Moore, ousted over the Ten Commandments monument? Tom Parker, who wore several hats in the state judicial system while Moore was in office and who was fired from all of them when Moore was removed, is seeking a seat on the Alabama Supreme Court. Tom is a former assistant state attorney general and has handled 30 capital cases and more than 350 criminal appeals.

Alumni trustee candidate brochure readers undoubtedly noticed the substantial involvement of '73s: chair Tyrone Byrd and nominating committee members Dan Hall, Bob Haynes and Rick Routhier. T-Byrd notes: "The long, arduous task of the slate selection process took place between February and December 2003, and included monthly face-to-face meetings between July and October. My experience on the NOMCOM has been very positive and rewarding. It has been a pleasure to meet and work with a dedicated and diverse group of outstanding alumni as NOMCOM members as well as those alumni who provided nominations input and counsel. The broad array of the screened candidates were very accomplished individuals, making the actual slate selection a very challenging process. In the final analysis, we, the NOMCOM members, humbly recognize the valuable contributions that we have made to the Colleges current and future stewardship." Thanks to all four for their hard work.

Fred Haas, saxophonist and pianist extraordinaire, has his own Jazz Toons label and recently released an album titled Telling Stories. Unlike his four earlier releases, this CD features Freds own compositions. Look for it at Borders or through www.interplayjazz.com. One of the College's first senior fellows in music, Fred led the Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble and a jazz quintet named Mole our senior year. Now, each summer he leads the Interplay Jazz camp in Beverly, Massachusetts, at which he integrates yoga, tai chi, meditation and breathing techniques with combo rehearsals, master classes, jam sessions and other jazz-related classes.

The monthly publication Bioprocess Internatinal has Michael Ultee as one of its editorial advisors. Michael directs the process development and manufacturing operations at Laureate Pharma's biopharmaceutical facility in Princeton. He holds four patents and has published and presented at numerous conferences. Among his special interests are antibodies, radioisotope-labeled proteins and protein-purification strategies.

John Dovidio, provost and honorary professor of psychology at Colgate, recently made a presentation, "Can't We All Just Get Along? The Consequences of Contemporary Racism," at a Colgate colloquium on diversity. John will be moving to the University of Connecticut this fall.

At the May Wearers of the Green event in Boston, honorary inductees from our era were Seaver Peters '54 (director of athletics, 19671983), David Orr '57 (a member of the alumni relations staff, 1960-2000) and Bill Johnson (mens golf team coach, 1967-2001). This event, held every five years, honors significant athletic achievements by members of the Dartmouth community.
