The origin of material for this column is truly amazing. I get stuff in the mail. Spouses send me e-mail. Some word of mouth. I make stuff up. Heck, even USA Today is providing me with material. While I only read it at airports and then usually just the "Sports" section, a longer-than-expected layover allowed for a scan of the "Life" section. And who should I see but Matt Daniels. Matt is the head of a Washington, D.C.-based organization, Alliance for Marriage, which is a force behind the proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages. Whatever your stance on this issue, it's interesting reading on Matt s background and perspective. The article also mentioned that Matt is rarely photographed. Hey Matt, I still have your freshman book photo.
Thanks to Ron denBroeder (Ron, that's now three times I've put your name in highlights) for his review of Jim Rasenberger's new book, HighSteel. For those of you waiting for a "breezy, anecdotal history of the men who built N.Y.C.'s bridges and skyscrapers throughout the 20th century, your wait is over. According to Ron, Rasenberger gives us the big picture and a real sense of who ironworkers are, what they actually do and why they love their jobs. The book focuses on an elite five-member crew involved in the construction of the Time Warner HQs on Columbus Circle. Go pick up a copy or, dare we say, wait for the movie.
In perhaps the greatest ironic twist to ever appear in this column, Bob Skrivanek has been named a partner of the newest intellectual property law firm in Boston, Lowrie, Lando and Anastasi, LLP. Suffice it to say, Skrivs' room was not teeming with "intellectual property" during has days at AXA. After 10 years at Digital as a design engineer and time at another law firm, Bob joined LL & A. Bob now practices in the areas of computer system hardware and software, semiconductor devices, fabrication and process equipment, video compression and decompression, electronic and electromechanical circuits and systems and medical devices. Sounds like tremendous cocktail party talk!
Palm Pilot Address Update: Dave Cogswell moved to Florida in 1999 and recently moved to Wellington to a house with a pool. Dave is a senior vice president for Ameri Bank. This, all according to his wife, Janet, who should know since they've been married for 15 years and have two kids, Amanda (10) and Zachary (9). Let's get to the point: If you're in Florida and need cash and a swim, find Dave.
I also received my 3,234,871st notice from the College about Laura Ingraham. I get it now—she's got a high profile. As many of you may know, Laura is a syndicated talk show host in the D.C. area on MSNBC. Her show—commentary, interviews and "goofy stuff"—went national in 2001. No word if the show is on satellite radio, but scan the channels next time you rent a car.
Those of you sick of fantasy hoops stories, can stop now. Those of you chronicling the sixth season of Cold Beer fantasy hoops, continue. After a long season full of upsets, injuries and savvy personnel moves, Hubert Smith finally finished first in our annual trash talk-a-thon. Oh sorry, I was reading upside down. Hubes was last, again!
