By the time this issue reaches your mailbox, I'm hopeful that we will have shaken loose the last vestiges of winter and progressed into the more temperate realm of spring. With spring comes the promise of summer, hammocks, lemonade and time spent in the out-of-doors: all—as Martha Stewart would say—good things. It seems as though our contingent has, in large measure, graduated from the matrimonial phase of our journey through life and is entering the next, procreative, phase of our existence. Time to bring the next wave of Dartmouth alums into existence. And with that introduction, the news.
Rodrego Byerly wrote in to correct a misstatement regarding his matrimonial status: while a recent newsletter stated that Rodrego and Shakari Cameron '96 got engaged in 2005, in fact they were married on May 19,2005, in Beverly Hills, California. Rodrego and Shakari now reside as the Byerlys in Los Angeles, so look them up if ever you find yourself in Dodgertown.
In January of this year Natalie Garza and the other members of the Dartmouth Association of Latino Alumni (DALA) celebrated the formal recognition of DALA as an "affiliated group" of Dartmouth College by the office of alumni relations. Natalie, who is president of DALA, was quoted in the news release announcing the College's decision: "This is a big achievement and the entire membership deserves credit for this accomplishment. As a group our priorities include increasing scholarship funding for Latino students, mentoring and recruiting Latino students for Dartmouth, expanding the number of regional events to reconnect our alumni with each other and with the College, and fostering stronger ties between undergraduates and alumni."
Continuing with the Garza/DALA theme, during winter 2006, DALAheld events in New York City and San Antonio, Texas. In attendance at the San Antonio event were Brenda Abundes (Rangel) '95, Vicky Martinez '97, Maria Simental '97, Claudia Vargas, Natalie Garza, Uriel Barrera-Vasquez and future alumna Lena Martinez-Watts 'OB. According to Natalie, a great time was had by all. The New York event was a gathering of about twenty alumni. Liz Sumida Huaman said of the event, "We were urged to be more than just a social alumni group, but to be actively involved in making a difference in students' lives, whether through small contributions for book purchases and even larger faculty/staff Latino representation on campus." We're told to look forward to more DALA regional events in fall 2006. For more information about DALA visit www.dartmouth.org/affiliated/dala or send an e-mail to dala(a) alum.dartmouth.org.
Finally, congratulations are due to John Maldonado, who in February 2006 joined the Boston office of big-time private equity firm Advent International as a principal. Prior to joining Advent, John was a vice president at Parthenon Capital and, before that (after taking into account a two-year stint at Harvard Business School) an associate at Bain Capital. John and classmate Chris Egan, also a principal at Advent, are part of an impressive group of rising stars playing in Bostons private equity sphere that also includes Marni (Fox) Payne, Suzanne (Michels) Obenshain and others.
