It seems impossible, as I write the column for the last issue before our reunion, that the previous weekend was Winter Carnival. Fortunately, this year there was a good wet snowfall, which made it easier to construct a replica of Shackelford's ship to the Antarctic, replete with lights, to adorn the Green.
A note to Pete Dromeshauser, whom I hope to see in June. Pete, your comments were well tak- en, except for the competence. Having lived near Hanover for five years, I have been amazed at the ability and drive that many undergraduates exhibit. Three weeks ago Jill and I went to a production of Evita, which was rewritten, produced and starred in by a woman in the class of '04 as her senior thesis. The production included the Dartmouth Glee Club and most of the musicians were undergraduates. To Ted Ely,you were always a man of few words, and to Bernie Fulton, you are handsomer now than wearing No. 15.
At this writing 83 percent of our class says yes. It is interesting that 767 students entered in 1951 but only 566 graduated in 1955. Yes, some departed for the service and returned later to graduate. Others transferred for various reasons or were asked to leave because of grade discrepancy. All are welcome to the reunion, which incidentally falls on the same dates as our graduation. Three postcards were sent to encourage the laggards—hope you enjoyed the memories.
Ralph Sautter and Carol had dinner with Dana Hennigar and wife Jill and Larry Veator and wife Patti. The American Hockey Association is awarding Dana with an award this April. I spotted Dana at a Dartmouth game but lost him in the crowd. He is to receive the Jim Fullerton Award for an individual who loves the purity of the sport. Mike Gorton, still playing the sport, should attend.
A nice letter from Tom "Hambone" Hamilton, acknowledging his appearance in June and the presentation of his fathers award (Adm. Thomas J. Hamilton) to a star football player who served with distinction in the military. Who else last year but Pat Tillman? It was awarded posthumously.
Col. William F. Gavitt USAF, retired, has been elected to the board of directors of the Military Officers Association of America. It is the largest veterans organization for military officers.
A note from Peter Robinson s wife, Katia, to Woody Goss revealed the unexpected death of Peter in Egypt on January 9. Milton Clifford "Cliff" Allen died on January 31 (see obituary).
