Greetings! The College has sent news outlining some of the literary output of our classmates. Carl Little has written yet another book, TheArt of'Monhegan Island. This bookis acollaboration with picture editor Arnold Skolnick, another in their series of art books related to Maine themes. This one "captures the appeal of Monhegan Island through the paintings and drawings of over 80 artists from the 19th and 20th centuries." Other books by Carl include TheArt of Maine in Winter, Paintings of Maine, Art of theMaine Islands, Paintings of New England, The WatercolorsofWinslow Homer and The Watercolors of JohnSinger Sargent. Carl is director of communications at the Maine Community Foundation and lives on Mt. Desert Island in Maine.
Look for At the Mercy of the River, by Peter Stark, which is due to be released July 5. This book outlines Peter's experiences on the Lugenda River in Mozambique. He was invited to join a small expedition kayaking the river, which was largely unmapped and had never been kayaked by a white man. The story chronicles his trip and uses notes and experiences of other explorers to try to explain "what drove man to push the boundaries and go farther than any other man." Peter lives in Missoula, Montana, and is a contributor to Outside. His work has also appeared in Smithsonian and TheNew Yorker. He is the author of Last Breath, Drivingto Greenland and the editor of an anthology, Ring ofIce. Congratulations to both authors.
Joel Goldfield wrote that he had just returned from Winter Carnival in Hanover, which coincided with Club Officers Weekend. Weather was great and the students created a great Peter Pan Pirate ship as the center of the Green ice sculpture. While there he ran into Carey Heckman, who filled him in on his College-related activities. Joel also included a copy of the newsletter of the Dartmouth Club of Eastern Fairfield County (Connecticut), of which he is president. The newsletter featured information about our honorary classmate, professor John Rassias, who is still active in the ALPS immersion program (more info available at www.dartmouth.edu/~rassias). Congratulations to Joel and all of our other classmates who are active in their respective alumni clubs. My apologies for the slim pickings. Help me out. Have an enjoyable summer.
