Do you remember the rallying cry "Forty-one out!" as it echoed on the Hanover Plain many moons ago? Or perhaps you recall the unifying cry of "Rush the Nugget! Either way I suggest a more appropriate yell could be "Survive!" Dick Krolik used the word when we talked on the phone and he thanked his lucky stars for getting him through WW II and providing him a long and high-pressure career in broadcasting with NBC, Time and LIFE. Another survivor is George Brand, who won a battle with cancer last year. He had previously retired in 1989 after 40 years with Butz Long, a large law firm in Detroit. George was a Navy officer who came back from WW II service and remained active in sailboat racing and skiing despite a broken ankle that refuses to heal completely. Dick Borella answered the phone from Crystal River, Florida, where he is a widower and the caregiver for an adult son. It's a confining routine for Dick and his only social outlet is a weekly game of golf. Jack Guenther in Niagara Falls, New York, sounded cheerful on the phone despite the loss of his wife, Elynor. She lost along battle to emphysema.jack carries on and keeps in shape via three workouts at the YMCA every week. Phil Hallam and Phyllis, his wife, are in Orange Park, Florida. With the help of social workers and nurses aides they are surviving despite Air Force Col. Phil's longtime health problems. George McCallum spent 37 months at sea during WW 11, aboard a sub chaser on the East Coast, on Atlantic convoy duty aboard a tin can and as an air officer in the Pacific theater. He was a civilian procurement officer at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, for 28 years and for five years was at Bankers Trust in New York City. Larry Barnett reported from Palm Harbor, Florida, that his golf game "stinks" but he still enjoys exercises with his dog every morning on the nearby golf course. His son-in-law recently built a beautiful course in Crozet, Virginia, so Larry looks forward to the half year he and Patricia spend in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
