Kay and I just returned from six weeks in Australia, New Zealand and Bora Bora—another fabulous trip Down Under seeing friends from my 11 years in Australia and good traveling this time to Perth, Margaret River wine country; returning via our favorite parts of the south island of New Zealand and then Tahiti. Traveling with us was my cousin John Hatheway '48. Wevisited in Christchurch Jackie and Dick Hlavac '56. Dick will be giving the class address at his 50th.
A report of a fascinating trip came from Tom Schoonmaker and Annie, who had a great time in Chile in January. Amazingly, they ran into Marina and John French in Santiago and Punta Arenas. Toms descriptions are fabulous, photos of him with a 10-pound brown sea trout were exhilarating (see our class Web site for details)- a great warm-up to Cecilia and Ed Willi's planning for a mini-reunion in Chile being discussed by the class for 2007.
Before then we have a great mini planned for Toronto. Joe Mathewson has many interesting activities—so sign up now. As Joe says, It s a bright and lively city, the financial-commercial- cultural capital of the country, sparkling on the shore of Lake Ontario, and perfect weather is guaranteed! '' Woody Goss is hard at work on the annual Alumni Fund drive—ably assisted by Eliot Smith and Paul Merriken and a host of other '55s. The College continues to need our support large or small, and we have a 78 percent participation target so get your contribution in now.
January 27 was a red-letter day for our Pulitzer Prize-winning author Nick Kotz. Nick received the Granger Award, which is presented annually to a Dartmouth College graduate whose lifelong commitment to public service has been exemplary. Joe Mathewson presented the award with classmates Jack Doyle, Woody Goss and Jill and Dick Hastings in attendance.
A recent report indicates Betsy and Bruce Bergquist continue to make a positive contribution to our modern hectic society by running workshops for couples trying to avoid divorce.
Ralph Sautter passed on the message that the Rev. Bob "Peaches" Cleveland is in his fifth year in a skilled nursing facility. Cards would be appreciated: 1410 Kingston Ridge Road, Cary, NC 27511-5940.
On a sadder note, my mail included notices that four of our classmates are recently gone: John Stonehill, Bill Lyon, "Tony" Kreulen and Judson Barnes. Obituaries will be included in future issues of DAM.
Keep the news flowing! Stay well, be well!
