Definitely save the date and start planning for our next class reunion June 8-11. We are going international to Toronto, Canada, at the Intercontinental Hotel/Yorkville. Joe Mathewson has arranged a great program for us, including two museums, city tours, two club dinners and maybe you can add a Blue Jays' game or a visit to the renowned theater at Stratford. You have to be there!

Jere Daniell, who will be speaking on Canadian-American history in Toronto, gave me some fascinating information on how Eleazer Wheelock, a wily old fellow, launched the College. He needed three things: money—Samson Occom, his star Indian pupil, took care of that raising 11,000 pounds in England; land—after attractive offers from several colonies, Wheelock settled on Hanover and, most importantly, in New Hampshire; and he needed a charter. The charter was key as Wheelock wanted to be able to award degrees like Harvard, Yale, Princeton (College of New Jersey) but also be able to teach not just the Natives but missionaries and "any others...thought worthy thereof"—and that, gentleman, means us and all the other classes that followed over the past 200-plus years. Tremendous amount of research done by Jere, and I will ask him to bring to Toron- to copies of a fascinating article he wrote on the founding of the College.

Turning to sports: Dick Hogarty has led a project to recognize Ellie Noyes, our former track and cross-country coach. His efforts supported by Joe Bachman, Dick Fairley, Paul Merriken, Ted Storrs and Mickey Stultz paid off, as the College recognized Ellie Noyes with a presentation plaque at the running of the Dartmouth relays in January. Roy Nyren reports that he and his partner won the Florida Senior Mixed Doubles Championship in three sets, including a 10-8 tiebreaker in the third set. Well done, Roy! Gene Elsbree had knee surgery in July but was back on the tennis court in October! And, finally, that fearsome sailing duo Jim Wiggins and Doug Melville made it successfully to Bermuda despite 20-foot seas.

The recent issue of Dartmouth Life highlighted our Gordy Russell for his efforts on behalf of the new Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning. This is another reminder to all of us that the student body of the College needs our support—Woody Goss, our head agent, will be contacting you about this year's campaign—so get your donation in now.

Stay well, be well.
