A new kid on the block. As of this issue the undersigned is your new secretary, replacing the irreplaceable Dick Hastings. Bear with me as I learn the trade. Dick gave me a good prep and during Class Officers Weekend I will be getting ideas from other secretaries and the alumni office on how to tell the class of 1955 story. Already it's very evident that the key to good communications is hearing from you individually. Please send me items of interest about yourself, your family and news of classmates. Joe Mathewson, our new newsletter editor, and I will be sharing all your input for future publications.
A final comment on my former role as head class agent for the past five years. First, thank you for your year-in, year-out support of Dartmouth. By the way, 248 of you have given 40 to 50 years since graduation out of a current class base of 466. Congratulations to all and keep up the good work. Woody Goss, our new head class agent and glutton for punishment, will be contacting you this fall about the 2005-06 campaign.
Our final official numbers for our 50th reunion year after all transfers/allocations were: $1,031,616 for the Dartmouth College Fund at 78.8 percent participation and for the total 1955 class gift a whopping $11,175,706 with 95.1 percent class participation. Fantastic job with tons of effort on the part of John Ballard, Harry Lewis, with the ever-present guidance of our then-president Woody Goss with a large group of hardworking solicitors. Most importantly, thanks to you, the class of '55, for stepping up so generously in such impressive numbers.
There was a great deal of discussion at our 50th reunion that classmates would like to get together on a continuing basis. Our new class president, Jack Doyle, is surveying the class for ideas on future mini-reunions, including where and when. Make sure you complete the survey.
Late breaking news: Frank and Nancy Carlton celebrated in July their 50th wedding anniversary. Jere Daniell is going farther afield with his history programs. We hear he will be in New Bern in the fall lecturing on colonial life in North Carolina—not to be missed, you Carolinians. Our class continues to be No. 1 in supporting the DCAC sponsorship program. Ken Lundstrom reports the visitation trip we sponsored for Ashley Smith of Anchorage, Alaska, resulted in her joining the class of '09 as a track and field sprinter.
In closing, sad to report Ned Heydt passed away on May 28. Obituary will appear in a later issue of the DAM. Stay well, be well.
