Another academic year concludes (although the Winter Olympics are in progress as I write this column).
One of the notable professors who emerged from our class is James Kloppenberg, the David Woods Kemper Professor of American History at Harvard. After 18 years of teaching at Brandeis Jim joined the Harvard faculty in 1999. He is interested in American and European democratic theory and practice since the 17th century and the relation between history and critical theory. "Democracy has been at the center of my interests from the beginning—to break down hierarchies and to help move the culture in the direction of equality." Jims books include Uncertain Victory: Social Democracy andProgressivism in European and American Thought,1870-1920 (Oxford, 1986) and The Virtues of Liberalism (Oxford, 1998).This past academic year Jim has co-led the American Intellectuals and Cultures of the Atlantic World" workshop at the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard.
Another Massachusetts denizen, focused on a different realm, is the Rev. Robert Bachelder, minister for mission and service of the Worcester Area Mission Society, United Church of Christ. Robert is very active with, and serves on the board of directors of, Worcester Community Housing Resources, which attempts to turn around neighborhoods by procuring and transforming troubled properties into affordable, viable homes, condominiums and apartments, lending to other nonprofits trying to do the same and offering potential homeowners training, loans and other services.
Meanwhile, on the West Coast this past year Reed Moran commenced teaching middle school English at Flintridge Prep—a nonprofit, independent college preparatory day school in La Canada Flintridge, California, near the San Gabriel Mountains—having previously taught at a public middle school. Reeds long career as a screenwriter and his journalism experience with USA Today enables him to bring talent in creative writing and journalism into the classroom.

President Wright was in Silicon Valley earlier in 2006 and referred to the "tremendous transformative learning experience occurring on campus. He announced it is time for Dartmouth to lead in higher education. Also on the program was Rick Routhier, who, as Alumni Council president, flew out to present a Distinguished Young Alumni Award to P.H. Mullin '91. Rick mentioned that he and Hod Fowler were in New York City to see Wicked and that Mike De Vries was featured in multiple roles in that fabulous Broadway production. Rick also commented that he and Sarah hosted 14 Aires overnight (!) on one of the groups off-campus tours.
Everyone is encouraged to drop me a note about themselves or fellow classmates.
