I would like to notify MALS alumni of two upcoming events. On Sunday, June 11, the MALS Alumni Association will host its annual champagne commencement reception in the faculty lounge at the Hopkins Center, immediately following the graduation ceremony. All MALS alumni are invited to share in the festivities and to congratulate and welcome the new alumni. On Wednesday, July 12, the alumni association will hold its annual luncheon at the Hanover Inn, with an open meeting of the MALS Alumni Council to follow. Again, all MALS alumni are invited to attend, but a reservation is necessary. Please call the MALS office at (603) 646-3592 to arrange this. The speakers for the luncheon will be professors Myrna and Harvey Frommer, well-known MALS faculty members. Their talk is titled "Oral History: A Kaleidoscopic and Unique Universe" and will be a discussion of their use of oral history in books and presentations.

On February 11 the Arts and Sciences Graduate Alumni Association of Dartmouth (ASGAAD) and the MALS Alumni Association sponsored their sixth annual Winter Carnival Celebration of Poetry. This was one carnival event that was not at all affected by this winters decided lack of snow and generally balmy conditions. This years reading, in the Wren Room, was very well attended; and a special thanks is due to Judy Chypre (MALS'99) for adding elegance to the reading by providing a set of china and a silver tea service for the tea table. Among those presenting their own work were alumni Frank Anthony (MALS'84), Gayle Giovanna (biology'90) and Nancy Silliman '95 (MALS'96). Frank read several of his poetic "bricks," which he writes every night without fail. Gayle followed each of her poems with a flute piece she wrote to accompany the mood of her poem. Nancy ended her reading with a lighthearted "Plaid Hugs" about a lover's envy of a muffler belonging to the object of her affection.

Joni Cole (MALS'95) has brought out a second book, This Day in the Life, which was recently given a positive review in People magazine. Joni and her two collaborators helped compile and edit This Day: Diaries from American Women two years ago. The new book is a continuation of their project to give a voice to "ordinary" American women living "ordinary" lives. Through the use of the diary format, the writing and the everyday concerns of women are revealed to be remarkable. Joni invites you to visit her Web site:thisdayinthelife.com.
