Thanks for responding to our pleas for news. Let's get right to it.
News of offspring and their exploits seems to dominate classmates' mail this time of year. Michael Rubens and Ron Perell proudly send word that they have sons currently at Dartmouth: Michael's son, Craig, is a new '06 and Ron's son, Dan, is an '04. Ron's father is a '47, and brothers Bill '74 and Rick '76 round out the family legacy (dynasty?).
Your faithful correspondent ran into Chris Carey during orientation at Davidson, where his son, Drew, and my daughter, Ellen, are first-years. Drew and Ellen share a dorm; he's in Room 307, she in 207. He's the wrestler, she's the singer; each has vowed to restrict latenight practice sessions to the gym and studio.
Jim Nachtwey's in the news again. In a CNN interview he talked about being at Ground Zero on September 11. "[I]t all went into slow motion. And I felt like I had all the time in the world to make the frame. Only at the last moment did I realize I was about to be hit with it." Now Jim finds himself on the other side of the lens; he's the focus of a Swiss documentary War Photographer. Director Christian Frei's Oscar-nominated film covers Jim's work over a two-year period shooting mass graves in Kosovo, riots in Indonesia and battles on the West Bank. Watch for it on HBO in November.
Another classmate with a new point of view is Tim Frawley, a former deputy DA recently appointed by Gov. Gray Davis to the Sacramento Superior Court. Tim had tried 50 murder cases in his 25-year career with the Sacramento DA's office; he'll undoubtedly see plenty more from the bench.
Doug Page '84 passed along an article from the Vancouver Sun describing recent protests aimed at Gordon Campbell, elected last year as British Columbia's premier (governor equivalent). Seems he's spearheaded some radical changes in BC, prompting several women to disrupt an Air Canada flight and chase him and his staff through the Vancouver airport denouncing him for "spending cuts, contract-breaking and lies." Hey, Gordie, we'll give you equal time to reply; just send us a Green Card.
Once again, I must close on a sad note. We have learned of the deaths of three classmates: Mark Harris, of lymphoma, on April 16. His wife, Betsy, reports that Mark, "was positive, upbeat and thankful for a good life right up to the end." And Guy Marchmont on June 6, after having been in a coma for several days. And Laurence Shay on May 19. Their passing diminishes each of us, and our sincere condolences go out to their families and friends.
Back to you, Scott.
