John Colangelo, who assured me that writing the Class Notes was a breeze, was enjoying a warm breeze on a Mediterranean cruise in early August celebrating his 30th wedding anniversary with his family.

Russell Schleipman was recently seen demonstrating the Porter Garden Telescope to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea Flower Show. Russell recently decided to join his father, Fred (also Dartmouth), in a new family venture reintroducing the Porter Telescope to the world (www.gardentelescopes.com). Russ is using his creative skills garnered as a freelance advertising photographer to handle the marketing/communications side of the business.

Pat Greenfield (widow of Rich Granfield) writes that their son Patrick '03 married fellow classmate Kerry Quinn '03 last fall at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta. Pat and Rich's daughter Erin (Northwestern '99) was the soloist along with members of the Atlanta Symphony. More than 50 friends from Dartmouth joined in the festivities, which Rich would have thoroughly enjoyed as one of the biggest Big Greeners.

Wayne Hobin, Mike Maynard and Sam Cuddeback reported that our class (with the help of 39 tireless classmates) delivered a total of 355 '71 contributions, raising $425,836, which is $11,064 more than the previous 36-year-out record. Participation was 51.8 percent—the highest in a reunion or non-reunion year for our class since 1998. The funds will be used to support 17 Dartmouth College Fund scholarships for the upcoming year.

Barry Brink is the focus of this columns indepth coverage with a few tidbits. The first tidbit worth mentioning is his settling into central Pennsylvania as a final home during the past few years, after attempts in Texas and North Carolina State College is a throwback to the times we grew up in. They still have Halloween parades and, until recently, never bothered with their security system, even when leaving town. It is impossible to go to any restaurant in town without someone coming up to his wife, Lela, at their table with their kids. Sometimes Barry thinks Lela takes care of the medical needs of 50 percent of the families in town. They live right off the Penn State campus and walk downtown...almost like the trek from Fraternity Row to Main Street. He also has 27 holes of golf at their local club to keep him entertained and involved athletically. His handicap is hovering on single digits.

Barry also conjured up some half truth/half myths on the '70 football team. During an interview for the September-October DAM cover story, the reporter said he'd been told that Barry would not let the bus leave until the team heard "Green Eyed Lady" on the radio. Barry told him that he liked that legend better than the reality.

On a sad note, James Long passed away in July after 29 exemplary years teaching, coaching and mentoring at the Hill School. He graduated magna cum laude and was Phi Beta Kappa.
