I can't believe that I'm still alive to write a column in 2007 and I'll bet that most of you are amazed that you are still around to read it. Bill "Bud" McClarin called to say that he is in Massachusetts in a retirement home. Wife Doris, after a nasty fall, ended up in a nearby nursing home. Both are doing fine. One Dartmouth and other Ivy League graduates live in the home. He and Doris are happy. He hated missing the 70th since he enjoyed other five-year or mini-reunions.
Ed Reich called to tell me the sad news that, after a long, courageous battle, Mildred finally passed away. Ed, you were wonderful the way you hung in there to keep her going. A true love story.
Spoke to Monnie Hattenback, who says life is wonderful despite his getting more and more unsteady on his feet. Despite using a cane he has fallen a few times. He thinks he might be getting ready for a walker—might? He has a large family around him in Florida. I can't believe I am older than he is, if only by two days. He keeps in touch with Irv Sager.
George Colton and Ruth went to Hanover for a few days and stayed with their daughter, who works for Dartmouth athletics. She took them to meet the football coach, who was charming and told them that he now thinks that he has the necessary foundation for a good team in 2008.
Just learned of the tragic death of our newsletter editor, Helen Geller, in a car accident December 30. Meanwhile we are in desperate need of an editor. Please, anyone—classmate, wife, son, daughter—please get in touch with me. I generally supply a great deal of the material but someone has to put it together and write it up three times a year starting in April.
Have a wonderful 2007! That's an order.
