Boy, what a year! 1960 certainly has been far from dull, both domestically and internationally while more times than not the shifting scene has found some one of our classmates involved, as has been recorded here and in the Newsletter. As the year draws to a close, what are 42s doing?
In the diplomatic field, Bob Hill has resigned as U. S. Ambassador to Mexico and will probably return to Littleton, N. H., shortly after the first of the year. In the meantime, he has indicated his intention of becoming a candidate for the Republican
nomination as a representative from Littleton to the State Legislature. Another member of the U. S. Diplomatic Corps., Carroll Woods, returned late last summer from two years as Consul to British Guiana to spend ten months in Washington, D. C., attending school to familiarize himself with current Russian affairs and review the language before departing for Moscow next summer and his new duties there. Prior to his leaving British Guiana, the local press editorialized as follows: "Most outstanding among his contributions - and one which will forever be associated with his regime - is the inauguration of the ICA mission to this colony. The help given by the organization has benefited this country immensely and the full impact will be increasingly felt in the years to come. In this respect must be included the scholarship Mr.Woods has been able to secure for theGuianese." Of further credit to the job Carroll has done is the appreciation for identifying himself with the life and problems ofthe people and playing his part rather thanchoosing the role of an outside observer. These characteristics, we know, will go withhim to Moscow and success on the new assignment.
Art Stukey has been named manager of a new standards department for Thompson R. am o W ooldridge Inc., Cleveland. Standards is one of two new departments created recently within the staff industrial engineering section of the firm. Art will develop and effect standards in office and factory areas, offering guidance in such standards techniques as methods-time-measurement, time study and work sampling. The Stukeys' live on North Street in Chardon, Ohio. The family includes four children.
October 15 found Dave Sills on his way to Chembur, Bombay, India, as a UN Technical Assistance Expert assigned to the Demographic Training Research Centre where he will work with southeast Asians in techniques of survey research and carry out studies on population problems. The assignment will cover this academic year while he is on leave from Columbia University where he is Director of Research, Bureau of Applied Social Research.
Striking out on a new venture after fifteen years with Marathon Corporation, now a division of American Can Company, Ronnie Westgate has left Oswego, N. Y., and his manager's position to move to the middle west in Wausau, Wis. Here, he is going into business for himself involving the distribution of Texaco oil products. And from the other coast, Ted Locke returns to his home town of Indianapolis, Ind., after seven years of practicing law- in Seattle, Wash., to join the law firm of Locke Reynolds Boyd and Meisell. Dave Carroll, who had been selling for the American Box Board Company, out of Grand Rapids, Mich., since the late forties, has now moved to Illinois as a result of last year's merger of his company with two others to form Packaging Corporaion of America. Dave will now be working in the Chicago area with headquarters in Evanston.
For the following story we are indebted to Matt Bride who writes:
Scotty Mathews has just been promoted from product manager on Fab to the newly established post of associate general products manager of the household products division of Colgate Palmolive (my client at Parade, incidentally). He will supervise the marketing on Fab, Florient, Vel and several other Colgate products. Scotty has been tapped as the first man from Colgate to attend the advanced management program at Harvard Business School and takes off in February for three months' study at Cambridge.
After four years of evening classes at Georgetown University, Bill Lowenthal has completed the course . requirements for a Ph.D. in history, passing the oral comprehensive in October on the subjects of Latin American and French history together with international economics. All of this ties in closely with Bill's work as deputy assistant to the Director of ICA (International Cooperation Administration) in Washington for liaison with the National Security Council, Operations Coordinating Board and Council on Foreign Economic Policy. In the preparation of his thesis, Bill hopes he may be able to obtain a position in Latin America with ICA which (we assume) would give him the proper atmosphere for his written dissertation as well as first-hand experience with his subject. Another government employee, John Sewall, has for many years been a research engineer with the N.A.S.A. at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. Here John works on dynamics problems that have application to both aircraft and missiles. Last March, he and Nell had a most enjoyable evening attending the Glee Club Concert in Norfolk and those of us who have had a similar opportunity know whereof he speaks.
We were amused with the terse expressions of Art Henderson who wrote in October: "New job - Director of Procurement Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Woods Hole, Mass.; new home - Garrison Road, West Falmouth; new outlook - the life that everyone wants on Cape Cod. Chuck Her berger, who became an assistant professor of English at Nasson College in Spnngvale, Me in 1958, received his Ph.D. (in English, of course) this past summer at Boston University. And a brief note from John indicates he is no longer associated with John Hassall, Inc. but has become an account executive with the industrial advertising agency of Sanger-Funnell, Inc. in New York City.
This winds us up for the month and the vear but I don't want to sign off without wishing each and everyone of you and your families a Very Merry Christmas and to say I'll be back next "year" anticipating our advanced Twentieth.
