The countdown continues June is now a short three months away and that s when we will be gathering in Hanover for our grand 50th reunion. Your calendar should show the dates: Thursday, June 7 (early bird), Friday, June 8, to Commencement on Sunday, June 10, followed by the Balsams in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, on Monday, June 11, and Tuesday, June 12.

The '57 50th reunion Web site is www.alum.dartmouth.org/classes/57/50th. All the information you need is there, including the registration form and a regularly updated list of all those who are coming. Don't miss it!

One of our own has received exceptional recognition. Legendary Cincinnati Pops Orchestra conductor Erich Kunzel was awarded a 2006 Medal of Arts by President George W. Bush. The National Medal of Arts is the highest award given to artists and arts patrons by the U.S. government. Erich was conducting in Asia at the time of the November ceremony in the Oval Office. He received a special presentation of his medal at a private ceremony with the President and Mrs. Laura Bush in December.

Prominent physician Charles Cummings at Johns Hopkins has produced the fourth edition of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, which sets the standard in this specialty. A review states that "whether the reader is a junior resident, otology fellow or experienced attending, he or she will find the otology information to be complete, well organized and very well edited...an excellent, contemporary survey of otologic, vestibular and skull base disorders."

Here is a list of classmates who live outside the USA for all or part of the year: Fred Ackiss, Ger- many; Bob Baehr, Scenic Grimstad, Norway; Kent Crane, Durban, South Africa; Al Escalante, Costa Rica; Len Gow, Calgary, Canada; Jim Howe, Tortola, BritishVirgin Islands; Chick Igaya, Tokyo Japan; David Sandborg, Hong Kong; and Dick Streeter, New Brunswick, Canada. If you are planning to visit any of these countries, you might want to consider getting in touch with your classmates. It can be very rewarding for both of you. Your secretary has contact information, which can be supplied upon request. Please let me know.

When your secretary was growing up in Wilmington, Delaware, south of the city there were mostly peach orchards and chicken farms. Now there are houses everywhere. Vic Kohl from Middletown, Delaware, has been very active in real estate development in that area.

Professor Herb West's name will strike a responsive chord with many of you. An extraordinary teacher of comparative literature for 42 years on the Hanover Plain, his legacy of inspiration and friendship to 10 generations of Dartmouth men has been memorialized in the new book HerbWest's Farewell Address (1964, unexpurgated) and includes a bibliography of his published work. You can purchase it direct from Westholm Publications, 298 King St., Cohasset, MA 02025, or from the editor, hamilton. james@comcast.net. The price is $28. Add $3 for mailing.
