Prospects are very much improved this season for the varsity crews. In the opening race only chance prevented the heavy crew from impressively stroking off with a very big victory in the Atalanta Cup competition held on the Dartmouth's Connecticut River course. Captain Dave Swift had paced the Indian eight to a length lead when a log jammed the rudder of the newly dedicated Peter V. W. Gardner heavy shell, forcing the boat out of the race. As a result, a typically strong.Brown boat outran Boston University for the victory.
The Dartmouth freshman heavies finished second behind Brown, with Boston University third. M.I.T. captured the Durand Cup in the lightweight varsity race, followed by Yale and then the Big Green, with the same order prevailing in the frosh event.
Much of the success of the Indian crews this spring stems from a new program of year-round conditioning. Coach Gardner has done an exceptional job of molding the oarsmen into cohesive units. An early start this season, as compared to recent seasons, points favorably toward one of the most successful finishes in some time. It is to be hoped that misfortunes such as befell the crew in the Atalanta Cup will not again deprive them of their much deserved rewards.
Dartmouth midfielder Gary Woodworth '68 takes a long pass in the Yale game.
