Having no current class news, these notes reminisce on the enjoyable visiting episodes with certain classmates in south Florida in the late 19705-1980s. As then director of Dartmouth's bequests and trusts program, I traveled around that area to call on older alumni and widows and speak to Dartmouth clubs. Wife Evelyn accompanied me after the first year. We imposed on the gracious hospitality of these classmates, staying with each for a day or two as we moved around the state.
First, there were Happy and Dusty Rohde. We stayed with them in their homes in Riviera Beach, Juno Beach, Jupiter Hills, Hobe Sound and Stuart, as they kept moving north to escape what they considered the overcrowded lower east coast. Also on the Florida east coast, we stayed frequently with Dotty and Dick Hobbs at their spacious oceanside apartment in Pompano Beach. In one year Pat and Rob DeGraff put us up in their beautiful home on the golf course in Lake Worth.
On the Florida west coast we enjoyed visiting with Betty and Wells Bates at their condominium in Naples, just across a golf fairway from the edge of the Everglades. In central Florida we stayed with Peggy and Joe Batchelder in their stately mansion in the exclusive Mountain Lake enclave in Lake Wales.
There is no space to recount the wonderful experiences we enjoyed during 12 years of 1939 hospitality. Understandably, we developed special friendships with those classmate couples and feel great sadness that half of them have passed on.
