The lead article in Peter Cardozo's most recent Thirty-Nine Out about our famous classmate, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Charles Neer, reminded me of a somewhat amusing incident of about 10 years ago. My right shoulder had been hurting for quite a while and was being examined by an orthopedist at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. I made a passing remark about having a Dartmouth classmate who I understood was well known in the field of shoulder problems. When I said "Charlie Neer" the doctor immediately stopped what he was doing and exclaimed in awe, "You know Dr. Neer?!" and went on to tell me how important Charlie has been in the field of shoulder surgery. I explained that although we were in the same Dartmouth class I could not claim to know Charlie personally but became familiar with his reputation from another classmate he had helped (the late Bill Webster, as I recall). Another bit of substantiation of Charlie Neer's great record. As for my own shoulder, it turned out to be arthritis that I have learned to live with and hardly think about anymore.

Dartmouth's gift planning office recently reported another $107,000 distribution from Clem Burnap's estate to bring his total bequest to just over $300,000. Eventually, it will be $400,000 and will fund three sixfigure scholarship endowments, one each at Thayer School (from which Clem graduated), the Medical School and the undergraduate College. I regret to report five deaths: Erwin "Duke" Lyon, Richard Morgan, Sam Hird, Hilliard Spitz, Charles Sayward. Our sincere condolences to their families.
