Well, just to go and show you what a trooper she is, I have to send along this baby announcement. Anne Kakela and her husband, Fred Honebein, are the proud parents of Anja Kakela Honebein, who was born on a Friday, April 25, here in Philadelphia. The irony in the birth is that it kept Anne from returning to our fair alma mater—she was scheduled to go up to Hanover with the Penn women's rowing team that very weekend. However, I can tell you this: She was on the water coaching her team the following Monday. So much for maternity leave! Congratulations, Anne and Fred, great to know son Beck has a little sister to pick on.

I don't know if this will be found in another part of the magazine this time around, but since I have no other news to report I figure I'll get the ball rolling on a potential summer read for you: City of Thieves by David Benioff (most of us knew him as David Friedman). It has been getting high marks from several critics—l know this because I'm looking at them right now, courtesy of David's publicist—and there is hope that this will be his big break. Of course, you will have the opportunity to see some of his work on the big screen soon: He adapted the bestselling book, The Kite Runner, for film; wrote the screenplay for Wolverine, which will be released in May 2009; and another screenplay (Brothers) has recently finished production and is scheduled for an October release. I can also tell you that I read "Zoanthropy" from his short stories in the 2004 version of the fabulous annual collection Best American Nonrequired Reading, and it was awesome and hilarious. So look for this classmate—a.k.a. Mr. Amanda Peet—to blow up!

Since I have no other news to report on any of you—not that that is a hint in any way—I end with this charming little tale courtesy of Tom Brodie's young son Matthew. I've met the kid a few times over the last couple of years, so when I went to the Phillies' opening-day game with Tom I asked how the kids were. He related to me that when he told Matthew that he was going to the baseball game with Mike Mahoney, Matthew laughed and said, "Mike Mahoney is a ballerina!" When Tom asked what he meant by that, Matthew laughed again and said, "Mike Mahoney does ballet!" Not sure if the kid knows something I don't.
