MATT KLENTAK plays a key role in rebuilding the Orioles roster.
As the new director of baseball operations for the Baltimore Orioles, Klentak will play a major role in building the roster for a team that last appeared in the playoffs in 1997. "We're looking for the infusion of new talent," he says.
A former shortstop who captained the Big Green baseball team his senior year, Klentak spent a year in the baseball operations department of the Colorado Rockies and then four more working in Major League Baseball's labor relations department. It was there he met Andy MacPhail, the Orioles' president of baseball operations, who recruited Klentak to assist him in scouting, player development, contract negotiations and the overall construction of the roster. "Dartmouth set me up very well to be in this position," Klentak says, noting time spent in the clubhouse—and in economics classes.
And the best part? "The job revolves around the sport that I love. Every afternoon, no matter how my day has been—good, bad, stressful—l get to watch a baseball game."
