Anticipation builds in the place where we spent four big years. Reminiscences flow like newly tapped beer and, thanks to investor turned vintner Launny Steffens, fine California reds and whites that line our tables.
Nearly 200 are present at our spectacular 45th reunion June 9-12. Roger Parkinson from Canada dines with Chuck Wessendorf from Connecticut and DKE brothers Mike Janvis from Washington State and Hank Rogers from Vermont. There's Larry Keyes from Vermont in Collis and Ed Mazer and Steve Kurland, both from Massachusetts, on the golf course. There's John Bailey from North Carolina enjoying each moment.
Phi Gam brothers Mel Meyers, Jim Rankin, Tom Richards, Marty McMullen, Wit Kimball, John Lehman, John Gessner and Stew Bither gather in the class tent Monday night. Bill Purcell reports he's still a litigator in New York. Pete Rotch of New Hampshire plans to retire from law this summer. Paul Binder is between Big Apple Circus gigs. Later Allan March and Bob Bysshe lend voices to the Hopkins Glee Club concert.
Steve and Gail Guthrie Tuesday are at breakfast, from whence '63s wander to fascinating lectures, including "The Power of Language" with shirt-tearing John Rassias, Peter Saccio on Shakespeare, "How to Swing Dance" and "The Yankees-Red Sox Rivalry." At our class meeting departing president Marty Bowne introduces new leader Larry Bailey. Forty-fifth reunion chair Dan Muchinsky becomes vice president and Harry Zlokower and Bill Russell continue as secretary and treasurer. Project chair Bob Chavey reports on our student interns in areas of economic and social need.
Tuesday night clouds send us to Leverone Field House. We have 27 Alan V. Davies Soaring Pine Winners to date. Now there will be 31, including outstanding ad man and uber classmate Dave Schaefer, who is surprised and visibly moved; Doug Floren, hedge fund master and college benefactor; Delaware Superior Court Judge Jerry Herlihy; and computer pioneer and frequent class host Michael Prince.
"Under the boardwalk...boardwalk." Dale and the Duds, recruited by Bob Haubrich, heat up. Howard Nannen is in from Hartswell, Maine. George Hellick of Easton, Pennsylvania, has 14-year-old grandson Connor in tow. Bucks Community College prez Jim Linksz and retired lawyer Tom Kraig await first grandchildren. Mike Leone and Randy Fields regale Tabard brothers Fred Crabbe and Wayne Sloper about the great flowerpot heist. Steve and Diana Lewinstein are having a ball.
"Got a gal her name is Sue." Gordon Fowler and John Lehman are on the floor. "Roll over Beethoven." Chris Harvey and Tom Jester are in the groove. "Tutti frutti, oh Rudy." Mary Muchinsky gets me out there. "A whop bopa-lu a whop bam boo."
