A "touch of class" has been added to our illustrious group with the recent announcement of the appointment of Ralph Destino as president of Cartier Ltd. - New York. Ralph has had a distinguished career in the jewelry-related field, including the founding and growth of his own firm which designed and manufactured men's jewelry. After the sale of his firm he joined George Jensen-in New York and subsequently became president of the Kenton Corp. which purchased Jensen. Prior to Ralph's recent appointment as president of Cartier - New York he had been managing director of Cartier Ltd. in the Far East. I'm sure that Ralph will add even more glitter to a flawless reputation of Cartier.
I enjoyed some time spent with Aaron andDoris Margolis when they passed through New Bedford, as very few people do. Aaron, Mugsy, for those of you in the know, is running a copying business in New Haven while still maintaining the family home in Longmeadow, Mass. The Margolis family is growing up, as are all of ours, with one son at the University of Massachusetts, a daughter at Syracuse University, and one son still at home. Those of you who live along the Connecticut shore might spot the Margolises sailing out of Branford in their 26-footer. If you do see them I'm sure you'll see the cocktail flag flying.
Boston 54's turned out recently to entertain Dave McLaughlin after he appeared at a Boston Security Analysts' Meeting. Besides a chance for reminiscing everyone enjoyed the opportunity to discuss college matters with a member of the Board of Trustees. Dave's visit gave us all an excuse to get together for a truly enjoyable evening. Dave's discussion of the girl/boy ratio, admissions policies and general trustee trials and tribulations was indeed interesting. The "distinguished" group attending included Charlie Morrison, Shelley Woolf, Dick Gorcey, Dick Barker, George McLaughlin, Don Meltzer, Buz Clark, Jack Reilly, Mort Heafitz and Rick Hartman.
It seems that no column is complete without some mention of our class political academician - Jon Moore. As his chief publicist, I do not want to fail to mention his latest venture. He has decided to benefit the world of business with his involvement, as evidenced by his election as a director of the Commonwealth Bank in Boston. It appears as if few fields are left open for Jon to conquer!
Joe Kabat recently moved from the Detroiarea to Attleboro, Mass., with his family in con. nection with his promotion as product manager with Laminated & Coated Products Division of St. Regis Paper Co. Joe is looking forward to his move as it will give him greater opportunity to visit Hanover.
Dr. Dave Leibowitz recently completed a four-year term as vice chairman and a member of the Tulsa Metropolitan Area Planning Commission. The main project of the commission was the updating and implementation of Tulsa's comprehensive plan for growth and develop, ment. This was an interesting change of pace for a surgeon but points out the flexibility that a liberal arts education gives its students. One of Dave's major interests in surgery is the Tulsa Burn Center, one of the few centers in that area The center serves people from three states (Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Kansas) and provides services ranging from acute care through to rehabilitation. Education of professional and technical personnel is a large part of the job.
Bruce Snyder, still single, and a resident of Gulfport, Miss., teaches French, English, and Speech at a County High School and is president of the County Teacher's Association and a director of that association at the state level.
Bill Cutcliffe and family live in Elnora, N.Y. His oldest son is at the University of Hartford studying engineering and two of his other sons play soccer for their high school team. Bill has an earth resource firm and travels extensively - Haiti, the Bahamas, and Saudi Arabia, among other places.
Phil Stoddard has been able to combine business (medicine) with pleasure. After completing general surgery and plastic surgery residences in 1971, he spent a year abroad work- ing in the National Health Service in Scotland, for six months in the world's largest plastic surgery hospital. He is now in private practice in Springfield, Mass., specializing in plastic and reconstructive surgery. This past September, Phil visited Marty and Jill Carter in Vienna while Marty was on sabbatical.
Another doctor, Wylie Scott, is practising orthopedic surgery in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Wylie recently moved in to his "dream house" in Sea Ranch Lakes and seems to be enjoying life in South Florida.
