You can't lose me. Here I am, back again with a new pacemaker and feeling great. Ed Reich called me from Florida to say that he was coming to Berkeley, California, to visit his son Robert, who is now a professor at Berkeley. We made a date, I flew up to Sacramento, California, to stay with my grandson Larry Davis, who is a doctor there and also a graduate of Berkeley. We drove over to there and spent a wonderful four hours with Ed and Bob. Ed and I go back to 1926, when we attended camp together. Ed had a group picture of the campers and Bob was amazed that we could recall the names of so many of the campers and what they did going back 82 years. More in the newsletter.
Irv Sager celebrated his 94th birthday. He says life is wonderful and he feels great. He insists I keep writing this column. The College advises me that we still have $5,622, which will be used as needed when we all die. The College will manage the fund for a fee of $100 per year.
I had a difficult conversation with Paul VanWerpen. He is having a hard time due to heart problems. On a brighter note, Suzie, daughter of Walt Patke, now 100 years old, says he takes no medicine, attends classes with her and they take long walks together. Give yourselves a break—e-mail Marvin Rauch at marvrauch@aol.com and treat yourself to one of his scientific dissertations.
I have received wonderful letters from young alums asking me not to stop writing this column, saying that they enjoy reading it as it connects them to Dartmouth the way it was. I feel touched and I understand because I feel the same about the younger grads. In the same vein, our local club had a sell-out luncheon for returning undergrads and the connection was terrific. Those of you who do not belong to your nearest club are missing something. Happy new year to all!
