Jim McVay has donated 200 pints of blood to the Red Cross through the years. It started when he joined Alpha Chi Alpha and Sheldon Prentice ’72 impressed upon him how important it was that all members participate in the community blood drive. You’ll remember that during our undergraduate years the legal drinking age in New Hampshire was 18, and the dormitory and fraternity that produced the highest participation rate of blood donors each won a keg. By our senior year Jim was the student leader of the blood drive. Scott Elliff ’75 sent me a recent article from the Charlot-tesville, Virginia, Daily Progress that highlighted Jim’s exemplary record as a blood donor and many of his other philanthropic contributions. Jim has raised money to fund a school basketball court, served on charity boards, organized tennis for grade school kids through the Charlottesville Tennis Patrons Association and provided backpacks of school supplies to 50 kindergartners for each of the past five school years. When not earning his daily bread in the residential real estate business, Jim also organizes tennis socials for local Dartmouth alums from the class of 1958 through the class of 2007, including participants from every decade in between.
Fritz Ledbetter came to Dartmouth from Alaska. After graduation he earned a law degree from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and returned to Alaska. He practiced law there and also got involved in commercial real estate. Over time he picked up a new nickname, Rick (from Frederick), and 10 years ago he moved to Texas. Today Fritz lives in San Antonio with his wife of two years, Rose, where he continues to work in commercial real estate. Fritz has a daughter who attends Texas A&M and a son who works and attends San Antonio Community College. Fritz stays in touch locally with Reed Greene ’73. Fritz has some great stories to tell about his former roommate Herb Hopkins and about Dick Ellsworth’s escapades in Alaska since graduation. Come to our reunion and hear them!
