Congratulations to Dartmouth and to Dr. Jim Yong Kim upon becoming Dartmouth’s 17th president. An incredible man—a B.A. from Brown, M.D. from Harvard Med and a Ph.D. in anthropology from Harvard. He was named one of America’s 25 Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report in 2005 and one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” by Time in 2006. And many thanks to Jim Wright, whose 11 years as president of Dartmouth will always be remembered for his strong, vibrant leadership and valued accomplishments.
Want to be wowed by some statistics? The Dartmouth Medical School had 5,300 applicants this year. Eighty-three were accepted. (Now I know why I didn’t want to become a doctor.) Dartmouth is No. 1 in the Ivies for Peace Corps volunteers: 18 alums in 15 different countries. Finally, Dartmouth applications for the class of 2013 (can you believe?) are up nearly 9 percent over last year (18,007 vs. 16,538). Of those admitted 95 percent were in the top 10 percent of their class, 53 percent were either valedictorians or salutatorians; 59 nations are represented. Dartmouth has also been recognized as a bestvalue college by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, the Princeton Review and SmartMoney magazine.
The obit of Anthony Rud in the March/April DAM inadvertently missed the fact that his son A.G. Rud graduated from Dartmouth in ’75 and Tony’s grandfather in ’14. Apologies.
I’m sorry to report the death of Holden “Wat” Waterbury in Bend, Oregon, in February. Our sympathies to his children.
