The April executive committee meeting in Hanover prompted a flurry of activity and news. First of all, summer arrived that weekend, at least briefly: The Green was packed with guests for the Woodsmen’s Weekend outdoor competitions (log cutting, ax throwing, etc.), it was Parents’ Weekend and Dartmouth played a double-header against Harvard at the brand new baseball field, Biondi Park. Secondly, in advance of the meeting I took the plunge and created a Facebook group for the Dartmouth class of 1968 to create another option for news sharing among classmates. We are now the oldest class with a Facebook group (it had been the class of 1973, and many other younger classes, including the incoming freshmen, have Facebook groups). And as I write these notes I (and the class, I guess) already have two friends: David Soren and Jim Lawrie, first to sign on. Thanks, guys! And besides being friendly, send news! At the executive committee meeting we had 10 classmates plus three who called in. Full minutes will be available on our class Web site.
While the focus was both the Annual Fund (let us excel in both participation and donations, in this time of need) and our 50th reunion gift, there was plenty of news and many plans. Gerry Bell reported via e-mail that the past Steamboat Ski mini-reunion in Colorado had 29 attendees, including 18 classmates. He is planning next year’s at North Lake Tahoe, California, between February 27 and March 6, 2010. Incidentally, it was noted that the Horse’s A** trophy has been retired and has instead become a society with appropriate certificate. Other mini-reunion events upcoming include hiking in the College Grant over the weekend of September 18-20, being organized by John Everett (jceverettjr@aol.com) with Jack Noon and Homecoming weekend October 23-25 for the Columbia game. There also may be an executive committee meeting during the summer in Hanover (date TBD) with appropriate time for class business and golf. If you’re interested, check with any officer. All are welcome! Mark Waterhouse handed out business cards for a brewpub in which he is an investor and where he can sometimes be found behind the bar: the Cambridge House brewpub, in Granby and Torrington, Connecticut. Same weekend I got a message on my BlackBerry from Gary Horlick noting that he has gone solo, doing the same things as before (international trade law), but without so many client conflicts. Check ghorlick.com for more info. Other recent e-mails: the Roger Arvid Anderson exhibit in Santa Fe last fall attracted Gary Kriss to the opening reception. And a sad set of e-mails from Chris Mayer alerting me of the death of Jeff Spencer. Watch for the obituary in this or a future magazine.
Keep the news coming.
