Lots of great updates from our Dartmouth clubs and groups!

Rick Paul 75, president of the Dartmouth Club of Detroit, reported that the club celebrated the holiday season with more than 40 alumni, undergraduates, parents, and Dartmouth family at its December holiday luncheon. Alums attending included Rick, Tom Hector ’62, Gary Johnson 73, Bill Peirce 79, Connie Craig ’83, Amy Folbe ’84, Laurie Marshall, Tu’88, David Hammond ’89, Jack McBride ’90, Amy Murray ’98, Patrick Murray ’98, Tu’04, Arianna Lee ’16, Jeremy Cheung, Tu’23, and Alicia Shiue, Tu’23.

Harry Holt, Tu’91, sharedthat on February 25, Bithgroup Technologies partnered with Black SONs to host a Black History Month science technology, engineering, and math (STEM) celebration at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. It was an event held for Baltimore city and county students from kindergarten through grade 12. Robert L. Wallace, Tu’84, was the keynote speaker and shared an inspiring message with the students and their parents about what it takes to pursue and be successful in a STEM career. Harry was the main organizer and orchestrator of this event. Eric Freeman ’88 served as a coach facilitating the building of a sail racer with students. There were more than 70 students participating and more than 150 attendees at the event.

Jeffrey Carton ’88 reported that the Dartmouth Lawyers Association held its annual continuing legal education and ski meeting at Snowbird, Utah. Organized by Gary Brooks ’60. the three-day event featured presentations by a number of distinguished lawyers, including Justice James Bassett 78, Justice Thomas Waterman ’81, U.S. Rep. Ann McLane Kuster 78, John Manaras ’67, Richard Merrill 73, Barbara Murphy 79, Sam Braverman ’88, Ben Riley 79, and Neal Katyal ’91.

John Bash ’67, president of the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota and Manatee, Florida, shared that on February 16 Albert Hine ’67, professor emeritus of geological oceanography at the University of South Florida, spoke on “The Geology of Florida: Factors Affecting Society.” Among others attending were his classmate, economist Martin Zimmerman ’67, fraternity brother and engineer Douglas Kerr ’63, Th’7O, fellow geologist Jim Doherty, Adv’75, and podiatric physician Jim Wrobal, Med’96. The group also discussed climate initiatives at Dartmouth.

Barry Weeks 72, executive director of the Dartmouth Club of New York (DCNY), wrote in with updates from the club’s many recent activities. On October 6, 2023, more than 200 alums and guests enjoyed DCNY’s annual kickoff party. Club president Charles Allison 78 welcomed alums and guests to the club’s 22-story facilities at the Dartmouth-Yale Club and shared information about volunteering and joining the club. Next, alums had an opportunity to contribute to the DCNY scholarship fund by bidding on an old Dartmouth cigar lighter at Doyle Gallery until November 9. Josiah Hannon ’15 coordinated a block of tickets on November 21 for the Broadway musical Here Lies Love, coproduced by Luke Katler ’15.

A record-breaking 308 alums and guests registered for DCNY’s annual holiday party at the Dartmouth-Yale Club on December 4, 2023. Everyone enjoyed the surprise 360-degree spinning photo booth and seeing 17 classic Winter Carnival posters while feasting on hors d’oeuvres, enjoying an open bar, and listening to the sounds of a jazz trio! Thanks to DCNY marketing committee chair Cihan Sahin, Tu’20. the DCNY coordinated a get-acquainted membership campaign with the Dartmouth Club of Long Island. Club president Jeff Futter ’66 and about 10 alumni from Long Island joined the DCNY for the party.

In February community service chair Soh Won Cha ’04 coordinated another excellent volunteer opportunity at the CHIPS soup kitchen. Alumni joined and helped with food prep, packaging, and distribution of meals for breakfast and lunch services. Also in February, close to 100 Dartmouth ’91s had a unique mini-reunion and celebration of their 55th trip around the sun at the Dartmouth-Yale Club with a live band, gourmet dining, and celebratory libations. Months of advance planning by vice president George Dunston ’91 and president Sara Potter ’91 attracted ’91s from across the United States. Janet Kingsbury Warren ’91 provided birthday gifts to support what could become a memorable 55th birthday tradition for every class! Finally, DCNY’s fireside chat program for 2024 was launched with Tom Kemp, parent of a ’23, giving a Zoom presentation about his newest book, Containing Big Tech: How to Protect Our Civil Rights, Economy, and Democracy. He was interviewed by Dorothy Price Hill ’88, the DCNY speaker series chair.

The Dartmouth Asian Pacific American Alumni Association (DAPAAA) co-chair Steph Westnedge ’92 provided an update from DAP AAA’s recent events. Sophie Cary ’08 and Sarah Gupta ’19 organized a DAP AAA Lunar New Year celebration at Lin & Daughters, a Greenwich Village, New York, dumpling restaurant owned and operated by Becky Lin ’06. It was well attended by 16 alums and sponsored by Young Alumni of Dartmouth Association Club of New York.
