ANNUAL FALL MEETING OF TRUSTEE BOARD

A meeting of the Trustees of Dartmouth College was held at Hanover, October 22, 1925.

There were present the President and Messrs. Parkhurst, Brown, Thayer, Lord, Little, Howland, DuBois, Tuttle and Knight.

Election of a Trustee to Succeed Dr. Gile The Board then proceeded to the election of a Trustee to succeed to the vacancy caused by the death of Dr. John M. Gile, and Clarence B. Little, already an Alumni Trustee, was chosen as a life Trustee.

Award of Degrees

On the recommendation of the faculty, degrees were awarded as follows :

Elections and Promotions

The following elections and promotions were made by ballot: Edwin Maurice Bailor to be Assistant Professor of Psychology for the academic year 1925-26.

Walter Brooks Drayton Henderson to be Assistant Professor of English for the academic year 1925-26.

Warren E. Montsie, Instructor in French, promoted to be Assistant Professor of French.

Robert E. Riegel, Instructor in Citizenship, promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor, with the title of Assistant Director of Citizenship.

Appointments

Appointments were made as follows: Philip A. Cowen as Instructor in Education for the academic year 1925-26. Rowland Newkirk Cloud as Instructor in Public Speaking for the academic year 1925-26.

Robert Addison McKennon as Instructor in Citizenship for the academic year 1925-26.

Julian Laurence Woodward as Instructor in Sociology for one semester.

Edward Jerome Webster as Instructor in Sociology for the academic year 1925-26.

Earl Kendall Carter as Instructor in French for the academic year 1925-26.

Alvin Louis Pianca as Instructor in Romance Language for the academic year 1925-26.

Elwood T. Dickinson as Research Assistant to the President for the academic year 1925-26.

Kenneth Neil Ogle as Graduate Assistant in Physics for the academic year 1925-26.

Brooks Arthur Brice as Graduate Assistant in Physics for the academic year 1925-26.

Leave of Absence

Leave of absence was granted to the following : James A. Winans, Professor of Public Speaking, for the second semester of the academic year 1925-26. Henry M. Dargan, Professor of English, for the first semester of the academic year 1925-26.

Charles ]. Lyon, Assistant Professor of Biology, for the academic year 1925-26. Report of Executive Committee

The Executive Committee through its Chairman, Mr. Parkhurst, made a report, accompanied with a recommendation relating to a new library building. After discussion the following preamble and votes were unanimously

passed: Recognizing the most vital and the most insistent need of Dartmouth to be a modern, commodious and well-arranged library building, and recognizing it to be a primary responsibility of the Trustees to secure this in behalf of the College,

Voted, (1), that the Trustees take measures for the immediate construction of a library building, and Voted, (2), that the President appoint a special committee for immediate investigation and study of all questions relating to this matter, which committee shall forthwith make a study of the library requirements of the College looking well into the future, secure preliminary plans and specifications, estimate the time required for construction and the cost thereof, and decide upon methods of financing, if feasible method can be found. Report shall be made to the full board at the earliest practicable date.

Field House The President presented the following letter from Mr. Howard Clark Davis: Shawmut Bank Building Boston

October 19th, 1925.

President and Trustees of Dartmouth College, Hanover, N. H.

Gentlemen: . , It is my intention to present a Varsity field House to Dartmouth College, this building to be located at any place where you may see fit, and the plans subject to your approval.

While I am not quite certain in my own mind as to what the cost of this building is to be, I should like at this time to say it undoubtedly will cost in the neighborhood of $100,000.

Trusting that this suggestion of mine may meet with your approval, I remain

It was thereupon

Voted to accept the gift of $lOO,OOO by Mr. Davis for the construction of a "Field House," and to request the President to express to Mr. Davis the thanks of the Trustees.

Votes of Appreciation

It was voted to request the President to express the grateful appreciation of the Trustees to: Mr. Henry H. Hilton for his added gift of $10,000 for the purchase of additional facilities in connection with Hilton Field, and to

Mr. Howard C. Davis for his gift of $100,000 for a Field House.

Annual Report of the Treasurer The annual report of the Treasurer for 1924-1925 was received and accepted.

Voluntary Chapel

The President reported upon the arrangement made for the conduct of voluntary chapel and upon the successful opening of the exercise.
