"Palaeopitus" has struck the eye from headlines in THE DARTMOUTH more than usual lately with the College Chest drive, Student Loan Funds, and educational committees being announced by that body.
The College Chest Drive for $l0,000 under the auspices of Palaeopitus and the Dartmouth Christian. Association closed with a total of $8,236.08 contributed in the popular canvass by cash and pledges. Although the goal of $5 per student was not attained, this year's sum was $127.02 greater than that of the previous drive. W. F. Corregan '27 captained the team which collected the largest amount of money, $838.50. Palaeopitus donated wallets as prizes to the following members of the winning team: Corregan, Whaley, Brewster, Rich, Horton, Laurence, Ward, Morrie, and McKay.
Before the drive started, Palaeopitus announced the proposal to create a student loan fund, having received the approval of the administration and the personnel department of the College. The Student Loan Fund is designed to help those men who, generally because they must spend so much time working to meet expenses, are unable to obtain the scholastic average necessary for a regular scholarship. In the past, several men have been forced to leave college, to give up their sincere efforts to get a college education, because of the college ruling which will not permit a man to take his final examinations unless his bills are paid. Palaeopitus hopes, by establishing this fund which will be administered by members of the college personnel department, that a long-felt need will be filled.
The money for this loan fund will be deducted from the proceeds of the Chest drive. The exact amount to be used for the loan fund has not been decided, but it is planned to have the fund cumulative; that is, any money left in the Chest at the close of the year will be considered part of the next year's available loan fund.
The latest announcement to come from the periodic meetings of Palaeopitus mentions an undergraduate committee to make "A Critical Analysis on Education in all its Phases at Dartmouth." The purpose of this committee will be to submit a practical report to the administration, faculty and undergraduate body of the College at the end of the second semester of the college year. The new committee is expected to evaluate the function and place of extra-curricular activities in the life of the College. The new curriculum, as far as it has been put into operation, will be treated and suggestions made to assist in giving it a fair trial in its first few years in the College.
The personnel of the Committee is: C. E. Strouse '27, Chairman, K. N. Meyercord '27, C. T. Swanson '27, S. S. Voorhis '27, R. B. McPhail '28, and F. Chase '29. Although the establishment of the investigating group is merely an experiment to focus student attention on undergraduate affairs, it is hoped that the report may become an annual affair.
