We waited in vain for the appearance on the Pacific Coast of some ambassador from Hanover. Finally we had to eat dinner alone on May 6 at the Bohemian Club in San Francisco. It was, as some term, a brilliant occasion; thanks to our new president, Dr. W. W. Washburn, a member of the Bohemian Club.
Forty places were set in the Rose Room at the Club, and forty of them were used. The fortieth man, Patterson 'O9, who had just returned from the Philippines, was taken from his bed in a nearby hotel at 9.15 P. M. and introduced at our gathering. The tables had been arranged to form a block letter "D,"with chairs on the outside only. The scheduled speakers and officers occupied the places on the bar of the "D." I say "scheduled" speakers, because before the evening was even well under way we found many who could speak. I refer to the business meeting. After one of the hottest and most contested sessions Dr. Washburn was elected president; his classmate "Moose" Englehorn was urged into the vicepresidency ; and, after much opposition, "Abe" Winslow was re-elected secretary. Prescott 'lO objected strongly to this combination of officers, but was finally overruled. They say his campaign money ran into five figures (and all was lost).
Electing the program committee was easy. George Stoddard 'lB (noted for character sketching) and Roy Frothingham 'l5 (a good worker) were ushered into this job without comment, other than well wishes from all.
As soon as it was learned that L. B. McWhood, musical director at the University of California, was to be with us for another year, the chorister's job was easily filled.
Hardly could we wait for toastmaster Line Wilson 'l3, retiring president, to sound the gavel and close the business meeting. The waiters had placed before us the start of what proved to be one of thS best dinners ever attended by our alumni body. While eating, we admired the table decorations which extended completely around the "D"—green and white—green foliage and white gardenias. This was not all. In the center of the "D" were massed flowers of real California color, and in their center a fountain playing through colored lights. Is it no wonder the food was appetizing ?
For advertising purposes only we had "Dartmouth Club" cigarettes fresh from New York. We wonder if sales have increased since May? If so, any commissions may be paid direct to our treasury.
The speeches: Dr. Washburn, still quite upset over his election, spent several minutes assuring us that he and "Moose" were not "in on" the business meeting as some suspected.
"Dick" Townsend '23 seriously told of his very interesting trip through Europe. He explained how economical it is to see Europe by automobile, talking direct to Line Wilson, who represents Raymond and Whitcomb.
H. M. Prescott 'lO proposed that we join in silent tribute to Dr. William Jewett Tucker, a man whose image Dartmouth College has assumed.
Jim Townsend '94 discussed the Alumni Fund, a subject we were all interested in.
During the evening Dr. Washburn introduced one of his friends, who delivered several solos, accompanied by L. B. McWhood at the piano. Many Dartmouth cheers were given and songs sung which held many of the alumni around the piano until a late hour.
