COLLEGE BUILDING PROGRAM WELL UNDER WAY
NOVEMBER 1927

The new development in the College building program is making rapid progress as evidenced in the advanced stage of construction of the dormitory and natural science building begun during the summer, and in the rapidity with which the library is approaching- completion. Over 3000 feet of pipe lines have been put in place to take care of the new buildings and of other contemplated expansion. Another immediate project is that of building a greenhouse for the botany and zoology departments near the site of the old Sigma Nu house on North Main Street.

The new dormitory, being built on Tuck Drive next to Hitchcock at a cost of $200,000, will accommodate 96 roomers, and is expected to be ready in April. It is a part of a projected group of three, and is being built in the style of classical architecture of the colonial period, to be in keeping with the library, the natural science building, and the rest of the development west of Tuck Mall. The interior arrangement is to be like that of Russell Sage, with the two-room suites with toilets and the single rooms in like proportion. It will be four stories high, and is a new departure in that it is the first dormitory to have concrete floors in place of the usual wood floors.

The natural science building is being constructed on Tuck Mall between Russell Sage and the library, on the site of the old Tri-Kap house, and is to likewise be in the classical colonial. It is planned to be practical and most complete in every detail of modern equipment. The basement will contain the lecture room, together with store rooms and club rooms, The first floor will house the zoology department, the second floor the botany department, the third floor the department of geology and geography, and the fourth floor will house laboratories and classrooms. The building will also contain private offices and laboratories for the instructors, and research rooms. The cost is $400,000, and the building begun July 1, is expected to be completed in April.

The Fisher Ames Baker Memorial library has advanced to the stage of interior finish and decoration. A furniture committee is now planning for the furnishing of the building, studying to keep it in keeping in period, decoration, and color. The interior is to be done simply, with painted woodwork, with the exception of the tower reading-room which is to be in panelled oak.

Announcement of the gift of a chime of fifteen bells to the College assures that the tower will not be without bells, for which there was made an allowance for a bell-weight of 75,000 pounds in the cupola.

The steel tower of the Library goes into placeearly in September
