THE United States Lines and the American Merchant Lines have been designated as the official Intercollegiate Alumni Steamship Lines, according to an announcement by Edward T. T. Williams, managing director of the Intercollegiate Alumni Extension Service which is owned and controlled by the leading alumni organizations of the country.

The alumni organizations of 103 colleges and universities, including the women's colleges, will take an active part in supporting the efforts of the United States Lines to build up an American Merchant Marine. Coincident with this announcement, the management of the United States Lines has assigned the famous steamship America of which Captain George Fried, of rescue fame, is the commander, as the intercollegiate flagship for the sailings this year from New York on June 4, July 2 and July SO.

"There are several reasons," explained Mr. Williams, "why the alumni organizations have selected the United States Lines and the American Merchant Lines as the official trans-Atlantic lines. We have been trying for several years to get the alumni and alumnae of our colleges together socially under conditions that would promote common interest in, and common understanding of, the current problems of higher education. Because of the fact that there has been a tremendous interest in European travel since the war and because every year the number of college alumni going abroad increases, we feel that the concentration of American college alumni on American ships will create many pleasant social contacts that will be of material assistance to us. The United States Lines were designated as the official lines, not only because of the fact that they provide excellent facilities for trans-Atlantic travel, but also because the colleges realize the absolute necessity of fostering an American Merchant Marine."
