One of the smallest but the really best round-up '9B has had prior to the Harvard game was held at the University Club in Boston the evening of the 27th of October. It was enjoyable from start to finish, and, as befits old-timers like us, the meeting was sober and sedate. Harry Goodall presided over the following gathering of Ninety-eighters: Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Carney, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Bartlett, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Chandler, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Littlefield, Mr. and Mrs. David C. Macandrew, Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Marden, Robert E. Peck, and Henry D. Crowley. It became a family gathering for the program, and Joe Bartlett told of his work as chairman of the commission that is expending $100,000,000 of federal and state money on relief of the depression and of the numerous additional jobs shouldered on to his commission, such as the distribution of the pork, welfare, employment, etc. Joe Carney, now the collector of internal revenue at Boston, talked on his new duties and some of its features, but varied this by remarks on the new political and social regime that is now being developed in this country. Joe said that we are adopting modified socialism, and that it is here to stay. He also echoed Harry Goodall's introductory remarks to the effect that college men and educated men need to get into politics. Joe said we are to blame ourselves for the low estate to which politics has descended. Both the talks were admirable and intensely interesting, and it is a pity more of us were not on hand to listen. Harry Goodall displayed the movies he took of our 35th reunion, and then showed those of five years ago, to give us an idea how white our hair is growing as the years go by.
Denis Crowley is now attached to the Internal Revenue office in Boston as an adviser for Joe Carney.
Miss Ruth Allison Brown, the daughter of our classmate Rev. Robert D. Brown, has been appointed a teacher of Latin in the Dunbar High School, Washington, D. C. Bobby Brown himself has recently been appointed on four commissions in the field of social service, two of them local, one state, and one national in scope. How pleased "Stubby" Wells would be to learn of the work his former pupil is doing!
