Diary of a Freshman

WE LEFT the diary last month with mid- year exams ahead. Now that they are all over we can breathe easily again and look to the more cheerful side of life- Carnival, for example. These exams were just as important as they were hard and they have had considerable bearing on the final grades. Some of the class have received first tastes of probation while some are in the Phi Bete rank. One benefit from marks is that they show about where we stand and are an aid in looking ahead to the second semester and June finals.

With these blue book monsters behind and a few days relaxation enjoyed we reg- istered for semester No. 2 and then saw the big spectacle of the year come and go. Many of us have read about the Dartmouth Winter Carnival, but the true effect is in being here at the time. The freshmen view- point seems to have been more or less one of looking in through the window but nevertheless we saw a lot! Just how the weather can be so perfect is hard to figure out except that divine protection has been given this winter fete for years. With the beginning of Carnival the town and campus looked more like a winter resort than a college. Upperclassmen and their guests were busy night and day but street corners are cold places for frosh. Actual Carnival events, outdoor sports particularly, are the only consolation.

The outdoor night, dressed up as a Swiss village, placed another Queen on the records. Looking with admiration on the lucky girl who hasn't a secret ambition to someday have his own choice receive this honor? The week-end brought two bitter defeats in the athletic line. The hockey team gave a fine account of itself but lost to Harvard in the last few seconds. Yale fared well during Carnival with victories in swimming and basketball. The latter was a great exhibition and belonged to the Green but the Elis merely grabbed it by virtue of a single point. Led by Dartmouth's Olympian, Jack Shea, the winter sports team did well and retained its crown. Freshman members of the team in speed skating and skiing events have assured us that for a few years Dartmouth will be strong in this sport. Our first year hockey and basketball teams have continued to exist with some vigor. Out of the blue has fallen games with Harvard for both teams. This calls for careful practice and will be a grand climax to the season. Though our sports were supposedly dropped we have managed to get along pretty well.

They say it's a long stretch from now 'til Easter but that remains to be seen.
