The Dartmouth golf team received its first setback of the season from Princeton on May 19, when Captain Wood and Wister of the Tigers defeated Captain Chet Birch and Bill Mathers of Dartmouth on the 20th hole, as darkness enveloped Hilton Field, and enabled their team to gain a 5-4 verdict. With the match squared at 3-all, Wood sank a long putt on the 18th to even matters with Birch, while Mathers also scored a birdie to defeat Wister in their twosome. This left a twosome and best-ball foursome to be decided, and although it was too dark to see the flight of the ball from tee to fairway, the quartet drove off for the extra holes.

Despite the difficulties, Birch, Mathers and Wood scored par fours on the 19th, which left the twosome and best-ball matches still even. On the 20th hole, all four drives were eventually located, but Birch had a poor second shot and Mathers' approach shot was never found. Wister scored a par four, Wood a five, and Birch a six, which gave Princeton two points and the afternoon's match.
