The following quotation is from an editorial in the New York Times, October 7 1937-
"Probably not since the publication ofAdam Smith's 'Wealth of Nations' has abook of its kind had wider circulationthan the 'Outlines of Economicsby Richard T. Ely, who at 83 years of age is stilleagerly at work. The book was originallypublished in iBBp for use in Chautauqua, where Dr. Ely, a professor of economicsin Johns Hopkins, spent his summer vaca-tions lecturing along with Dr. HerbertAdams in history, Dr. William R. Harperin the Bible, Dr. Mahaffy in Greek lit-erature, and other great scholars of theday. It carried then the modest title of'lntroduction to Political Economy.' Butit has advanced into a survey of the entirefield of economics and into a volume insize comparable with that of certain mostpopular books in the field of fiction. Thebook has entered upon its sixth editionwith a record of over 320,000, chiefly incolleges, since 1910 (and a total 'well uptoward a million' if sales in a separateEnglish edition were included), and withmore than a thousand pages of wellprinted matter. Moreover, it has beentranslated into many languages."
Ely has accepted an invitation to enter the faculty of Columbia University as visiting lecturer in economics. The position will enable him to concentrate on finishing certain lines of research.
