Returning a few days ago from a three weeks' vacation in a Maine Camp in the wilds of Northern Maine, north of Mt. Katahdin, fly fishing for trout and salmon and feeling fine and fit, your Secretary found awaiting him the unwelcome information that one of our few remaining classmates, William I. Clarke Smith was laid up in the Memorial Hospital at Patterson, New Jersey, having recently undergone quite a serious major operation. Although we have no late news (and no news is good news), it is hoped that the outcome will be favorable and that he will have a quick recovery.
The change in the time of the Meeting of the Class Secretaries and Treasurers from the annual date in May to the week after Commencement does not appear to meet with unqualified or universal approval. This experiment is in the minds of many of questionable value and advantage, because with so many other distractions such as Hanover Holiday as well as Class Reunions, the sessions must necessarily be hurried or shortened with the consequent lack of opportunity for consideration and discussion of important matters scheduled to come before the Association.
For the first time in years our Class was not represented at the June Meeting. Business requirements and conditions make it very difficult, if not impossible, for your Secretary to attend a meeting in June. The continuance of the experiment will quite likely preclude many from attendance at these meetings.
It is a pleasure to record that notwith-standing our small number and the late start we made in seeking contributions for the Anniversary Campaign of the 1941 Alumni Fund due to the passing of our former Class Agent, the late Dr. Sam T. King in the midst of the Campaign, we were nevertheless able to make a creditable contribution to the Dr. Hopkin Twenty-fifth Anniversary Fund, our Contributions equalling 95% of our objective, thereby receiving from the Fund Committee special mention of our improvement over the previous year's rating on the list of Alumni Fund Contributions. All things considered, we did pretty well since with the loss of three classmates during the past year our numbers are sadly depleted and only four of us are left out of a Class which graduated 65.
