Alumni Council Meets
December 1941 Leslie W. Snow '12, Chairman, Clark Weymouth '26, Walter D. Douglas '31

THE ANNUAL FALL MEETING of the Alumni Council in New York on November 7 was featured by the nomination of two Alumni Trustees and by an informal talk on College affairs by President Hopkins. In his appearance before the Council, Mr. Hopkins discussed at some length his philosophy of organization within the College, and keyed his remarks to the impending election of two new Trustees to fill present vacancies on the Board.

The middle point in the classes of living alumni is 1928, the President pointed out, whereas the present membership of the Dartmouth Board of trustees is not representative of any class later than 1916. About 80 per cent of the Dartmouth alumni body has graduated during the past 25 years and this large group of alumni deserves representation on the Board, he told the Council. The two Alumni Trustee vacancies at the present time and another occurring in June, when Philip S. Marden '94 ends his second five-year term, provide an unusual opportunity to add the leaven of youthful members to the Board, he added.

TRUSTEE CANDIDATES NUMEROUS

In his remarks Mr. Hopkins spoke of the wealth of good Trustee material in the alumni body, both among older and younger age groups. He spoke of the natural tendency of members of corporations, boards of directors and trustees to fill vacancies by election of contemporaries with whose distinguished careers they are entirely familiar. He wished, he said, to avoid perpetuation of the Dartmouth Board of Trustees within any one age group even though this means the loss of the services of men of outstanding abilities and qualifications. There could be no question, he asserted, that excellent Trustee material existed in abundance among the younger alumni.

Prior to President Hopkins' talk the Alumni Council had presented gifts to him and Mrs. Hopkins in celebration of the 25th anniversary of his administration. This part of the program took place at the close of the Council's luncheon at the Dartmouth College Club and was attended by New York reporters. The full program of the day's meetings began with breakfast conferences of Council committees. The first general session began at 10, with Sigurd S.
